Lois... any chance your pain is worse now because of the weather? I've had

new pains all the way down my leg the past 2-3 days because of several fronts

moving in. At least I hope that's what it is!!!

Greg, about the deep tendon massages... those hurt don't they? I'm a bit

afraid of them but I have heard they work wonders. Yikes! No pain, no

gain???

Hello Lois,

I know it's no help, but I never did have any hip pain. All the pain I

experienced ran down either the inside or outside of the thigh, really bad

in the knee, shin & ankle. The hip replacement cured it.

What caused it though was enflamed tendons in the leg. A deep therapeutic

massage working on the tendons in the thigh & bad leg made it 80% better

after the first 1/2 hour. Not a relaxation massage though. A deep tendon

massage. Other than that, anti inflamitories may help. Consult your

physician regarding other pain releif until the day of your op.

Best,

Greg

types of pain. While I have a lot of hip pain and groin pain, I am

experiencing really awful knee and shin pain. Is this common?

Is there anything I can do to relieve it besides pain killers

(doesn't help much) and waiting for the surgery date (March 27th)?

Any simple (I can't do much at this point) exercises? Words of

wisdom? Is this even " normal " to have pain in the knee and shin?

Thanks,

Lois,

I am still pre-op and experience pain radiating down my lateral

(outside) thigh and in the knee medially (inside). I am sure that

this is due to strain of muscles, tendons and ligaments. I have

osteoarthritis of only 2.5 years, but the cartilage is basically

gone and I have leg shortening. Even with a lift in one shoe,

balance is off when we limp.

I also notice considerable " clunking " pre-op especially in the am

when the joint appears loose. This has really cramped my style in

recent weeks. Even a short walk in a mall is difficult.

I'm with you, I'm ready for surgery. Most of these symptoms will

regress rapidly once the anatomy is " Restored " and you start normal

activities again.

Bradley,

No they don't hurt! I actually found an Hispanic lady who used to work in a

hospital in Mexico City & now works privately in this country. It is called

" Savadora " in Spanish, not massage. Two different things. No pain though.

felt good. Works with her hands and can actually palpate & find the

offending tendons, then works those with pushing & pulling motions, using a

heated herb infused oil. You have to go home with a oil infused wrap (paper

towels) belted on around your waist with a lumbar belt or something like

that and not shower for 24 hours.

Before the first treatment (1/2 hour) I could lift my knee about 3 " off of

the ground. After it was over, I could lift it to my waist. The second

treatment a week later made it that much better. I could not lift it that

much higher, but it was that much less pain. She didn't speak English & I

didn't speak Spanish, but we made out with just a few words and pointing.

I'm sure every other culture has a similar procedure. The same design

engineering team made us all. Try looking for theraputic massage & talk to a

couple of people about tendon massage. NO pain, Mucho gain!!!

Obviously it can't cure a bad hip, but it most definitely does alleviate a

lot of the worst of the pain. Beyond that I'm afraid it's drugs my friend.

Micheal,

The pain you are experiencing now will be all gone, (TOTALLY!) as soon as

you wake up.

The pain from the actual procedure is a pittance compared to what you have

now. I am now two weeks post op & I never did feel any surgical pain. just a

tightening around the stitched areas. What I am experiencing now is a lot of

trapezus pain from supporting all my weight on my shoulders. I am going to

seek out my Savadora again this week for an upper body work out.

I had to laugh at this one. I live in the rainy Pacific Northwest, and

used to REALLY hurt when the weather got bad. Now I have to look outside

to see if it is raining--my hips don't tell me any more!

They hurt (like the dickens), but it is a much different hurt than the hip

pain. I still get regular massages, and go through some of the same

torture as Greg, but it is SO different than pre-op, where they were doing

some of the same things just to keep me moving until surgery. You mean

there are massages that just relax you??? ;-).

I had some pain, mostly in my lower back--muscles that were doing the work

my hip was supposed to be doing. I got resurfaced mostly because of how

disabled I was getting. If I had the ROM and activity level I have now, I

could have lived with the pain. But having the pain and still not being

able to tie my own shoes, put on my own socks, pick up stuff I dropped,

walk more than a couple of houses distance, etc. etc. drove me to

surgery. I haven't been to a movie in a theater in years. I could never

sit still long enough because my hips would start to ache and act up. I

went to a concert on Saturday that was quite long, no intermission, mostly

in the dark, and was being recorded (so they really wouldn't have

appreciated me tripping and falling on my way out the door). I sat there

the entire time and only noticed my hips toward the very end. Pre-op, I

would have had to leave long before then as I would have been too

uncomfortable to stand it. Of course knowing that, I would not have even

gone to the concert.

Lois: I had the same kind of pains - they got so bad I couldn't

walk. I would take my crutches to the pool and swim as much as I

could. Swimming is not my favorite thing, but at least it kept me

moving and kept my muscles working. About 2 weeks prior to surgery I

couldn't do that anymore so I hung out at home and was probably very

miserable to be around. However, those pains and all the joint pains

were gone when I woke up from surgery. the only pains I have had

since are body re-adjusting pains and they are still happening

sometimes. Everytime one part gets straightened out something else

aches for a day or two - these are the really good aches - I am

happy everyday I have new one!!!! Deep massage did help somewhat but

I found it only short term relief - better than none tho!

Good luck - it will soon all be a memory.

Hello Lois

I only had severe knee pain before being diagnosed bone on bone in my right hip.

I initially could not believe there was nothing wrong with my knee but I was

told it was referred pain from my hip. Now 6 weeks post op(resurf followed by

THR) I have no pain at all in my knee (just pain in my left hip!)

I'm so glad you posted this.

I was getting worried because sometimes my knee seems to hurt worse

than my hip. I don't think I've ever had my knee examined (or

x-rayed) and I was starting to wonder if I had a problem with both!

Hi Lois,

Your pain is exactly what mine was and I found a TENS unit

(transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator) very helpful. I got me

through my work days and allowed my to relax at home. Mine was fully

covered by my insurance since I asked for a prescription for it from

my Ortho doc. (if not, you can buy them elsewhere on the internet)

The doctors office took care of everything. They would have delivered

it to my work or home, but I opted to pick it up so I could pick out

the kind of electro pads I wanted. I picked the largest ones they had

and placed one on my leg above my knee and one my groin. It took care

of all the muscular/nerve like pain and allowed me to walk with less

limpng. I also did the neuro-muscular deep tissue massage. It was

great at frist, increasing my range of motion in my leg like I hadn't

seen in years. However after 5 treatments, something went wrong and

I had such bad sciatic pain I had to get an epidural steriod

injection in my back to relieve my discomfort. My pain had moved

from the front of my thigh to the back and I was so miserable I

couldn't work. If you go for massage be sure who you pick is well

qualified and reputable. I also found laying on my back with pillows

under my knees very relieving as well. Have enough pillows so your

feet almost dangle and you get a pull in your hip. Your leg may spasm

a bit at first but it will go away in a few minutes. Post-op my

pain is completely gone. Good luck and hang in there.
