I just got notice yesterday that yet one more person is being added to out " team " and am overwhelmed. I know this is what they want, but I'm not sure I can face it on my own. I don't know of anyone in that area, but someone else on the list might. My suggestion is to bring along a friend. If nothing else, have her carry the tape recoders and handle changing the tapes. It's moral support, and that's better than going in there alone! Plus if they are using imtimidation, you may want that meeting on tape in order to share it with a lawyer. Guest guest
Anyone know of any good advocates/lawyers regarding IDEA in the Fairfax County, VA area? I just got notice yesterday that yet one more person is being added to out " team " and am overwhelmed. I know this is what they want, but I'm not sure I can face it on my own. I recently confronted our TOD regarding her lack of input into the meetings and her letting the county resource personel and her mentor from the HI dept. run the meeting. I told her that I could tell that she was being manipulated and asked why she wasn't putting the interests/needs of my daughter on the table? She is a sweet, young southerner...she started to cry. I wasn't harsh with her, just confronted the heart of the issue. She had no answer other than " I am trying my best with Maggie. I do everything I am asked to do with her. " I told her that was not the issue, but that Maggie's needs were being overlooked by all the sidestepping the team is doing to not document and provide accomodations that we have always talked about and said that we are using, but never put in the IEP specifically. This year we want them in there because the school has placed Maggie with poor teachers for the past two years and there is alot of time wasted fighting to move her to another class or convincing the latest teacher that she needs to use the strategies outlined in handouts we give her for deaf/hoh students.....It's ridiculous...all this time and money spent wasted fighting against a little girl (Maggie) who is basically doing very well!
