Guest guest
Hi, Somehow, I got into this group, but hadn't heard from it in forever. Today my box has over 30 messages from the group, so it seems a good opportunity to ask a question. I got my EMT-B several years back and worked full time for two years. I loved it. Life happened, I moved, I was out of it for two years, then went back to school and knocked out A & P 1 & 2 along with other classes. I was about to enroll in paramedic school when I got thyroid cancer. I endured a total thyroidectomy and radioactive treatments, was given the all-clear, and told to resume my life. I will have to monitor this for the rest of my life; my question is, now that I'm a medication-dependent person (Synthroid) can I be a paramedic? It's all I've ever wanted to do. Thanks, Renae
Guest guest
Renae, I have been taking Synthroid and Cytomel (amongst other things) for the last 2 years. As long as you remain compliant, you shouldn't have any problems. -Thom Seeber, CCEMT-P any hope? Hi, Somehow, I got into this group, but hadn't heard from it in forever. Renae: as long as you keep taking your medications and are followed on a regular basis (which could be as little as every 6 months if everything else is going well), there should be no problems with you achieving a full career as a Paramedic... There are a lot of docs and nurses as well as other medics who have to take Synthroid or other medications on a regular basis. ck S. Guest guest
Thanks folks. It's wonderful to hear that thyroid cancer won't keep me from being a medic, eventually. :-) I certainly have an empathy for patients now! Renae

Guest guest
This is my experience as well . . . haven't been active in a year or more (only was because some CISD guy kept talking about me here as if he knew me!), suddenly being inundated with e-mail. The admonitions from the em-doc regarding professionalism were good stuff, though, and well worth the read. But not knowing how this mail got turned on, I don;t know how to turn it off. Can someone advise?
