saw the internist yesterday afternoon. When we left the doctor's

office, Nick said that it was a waste of time and he thinks the doctor doesn't

really care. I asked the doctor what could Nick do for his pain and the doctor

said that he could take extra Maalox. Since Nick doesn't like liquid medicines,

I had bought a bottle of Maalox chewables. Each tablet has 1000 mg calcium

carbonate and 60 mg of simethicone. By the time he feel asleep yesterday, he

had been awake for 36 hours. The pain is so unbearable when it flairs up. The

good thing is, the pharmacy assistant at Community Health's Pharmacy was able to

get the Protonix approved. Nick has been on this medication for two days. The

pharmacist said that some people get relief right away while others will get

relief in a few days. The internist wants Nick to take the Protonix for at

least 3 months even if he feels fine after the first month. He also wants Nick

to lose 10 to 15 pounds

over the next year.

I don't know if it's safe to take more than 8 of these Maalox tablets in a 24

hour period. The bottle says not to go over that amount. Unless he is hiding

it, Nick may be on his way to healing. So far, he's not screamed in pain.

Yesterday, he was tired. He was also in pain. I had him take the Maalox. He

keeps saying it doesn't help. I gave him a couple Benadryl tablets. It helps

him sleep sometimes, but last night it didn't. So I gave him two Trazadone

tablets. They make him dizzy, but I told him that he just needs to lay down.

The dizziness passed and in no time he was asleep. He slept from about 5

yesterday evening to about 7 or 7:30 this morning.

I hope he will improve. He's been in so much pain for so long. Maalox, Tums,

Prilosec, and Zantac do not help.

Sharon, thank you. I hope it helps him. Nick is the type of person who doesn't

like to take medications if they don't help him.

Kathleen, Nick doesn't take prednisone. He had been taking Celexa, but he'd

been weaned off of that and was starting up the Welbutrin. Unfortunately, the

Welbutrin did nothing to help him and seemed to be contributing to the agitation

that the stomach/esophagus pain was creating.

Right now, he is taking Protonix. He started it yesterday and had his second

dose this morning. When his esophagus heals and he can return to a more normal

Nick, then I will see if he still needs an antidepressant. Right now, he's

feeling depressed because of all the pain he's been having.

Kathleen, Nick was okay on Celexa for about 2 years. In October, or early

November, he wanted to go to the clinic to talk with Mara about how he was

feeling because he thought the Celexa was making him depressed.

She said that she wanted him to try the Welbutrin. If that didn't work, she

would try him on Cymbalta. Right now, though, he's got these issues with his

stomach and esophagus and no matter what anti-depressant he has, it probably

wouldn't be the right one. The trazadone was prescribed to help him sleep.

Mara ordered 50 mg tablets and told him that he could take one or two at

bedtime.

I think once Nick's pain issues get resolved, he may not need an antidepressant.

But, the Welbutrin was causing him increased agitation. However, it's not easy

to say for sure since the pain is also causing increased agitation.

It might be good if he would try Celexa again. MS can really make one

worry. It is a scary disease.

What is wrong with his esophagus? Does it spasm? He needs to relax. Easy

to say --- I know --- How old is he?

I will pray for him. Would he pray for himself?

How about relaxation exercises? You can get some really good relaxation

tapes.

Hugs,

Kathleen

Prayers that this new med works fast for him - he must be in such misery!

And on your later post about Wellbutrin - my husband was given this to

help him stop smoking, and after 2 weeks it was a choice of dumping it all

down the toilet or divorce - he became so paranoid and agitated that at one

point he got the shotgun to shoot his own dog because he was mad at me....

Of course other folks do very well on it, I understand. But if

definitely ISN'T for everyone.

How long has he had the pain? Does he drink coffee or black tea? I ask because I suffered with bad stomach pain and after I quit drinking coffee and black tea my stomach pain went away. When ever it was suggested to me the coffee was making my stomach hurt I always said "no, I've had coffee every day since I was 14." Guess what? Sharon and all who commented, is 22 years old. He doesn't have an MS diagnosis. He has been on Protonix for 3 days. He doesn't seem to be in as much pain. At least, he is not screaming and crying. He is still having breathing problems. That could go along with what is going on with his esophagus/stomach. He doesn't drink anything with caffeine in it. He used to but has quit. When we go out to eat, he asks what kind of root beer the restaurant has. If it's Barq's, then he chooses lemon-lime soda. Barq's has caffeine in it. Nick also has mild to moderate scoliosis. If he sits up straight, his back starts hurting. He's been in physical therapy for his back before. He also has problems with his arches. I don't remember what the doctor said, but Nick has

to wear orthotics in his shoes. Anytime he gets a new pair of shoes, he needs to make sure the orthotics fit in the shoes before we can buy them. It makes it hard to buy shoes for him since he wears size 14. I am working on a gourd basket now. It's kind of taken over the area of my table where I usually do my painting. I don't remember if I sent a picture of it after I first started working on it, but I've attached a picture of what it looks like right now. I can send updated photos as I make progress on this. St. s Community Garden is having a fundraiser in the spring and I'm hoping that this basket brings in a good amount of money. Donna in WA

Donna in WA
