Guest guest
Dear Carolyn, , Glenna, Sandi and Arian, and anyone I missed Thanks for all of you repsponses. I honestly feel like I have a newborn again. And to think we are thinking about having another child-am I crazy or what?? slept really good on the depakote and really has always been a good sleeper. However, the last 6 mos on the depakote he would come into our room at 4 am and fall right back asleep. It has gradually gotten worse and now he is not sleeping. Maybe 1-2 hours combined. He is grunting alot and fidgeting and agitated. Its like he is tired but can't sleep. But, the tics?? we were seeing are diminishing and I have not seen any in a few days. His neuro gave us Zanaflex to give him for sleep and it puts him to sleep but he wakes up after a few hours. Last night I gave it to him when he woke up and it put him to sleep but then a alarm clock went off in him room (don't ask me why) and woke him up. I could just scream. I also think the mood stabilizer in the dekapote may have helped . We're just waiting to get everything weaned to see what we are really dealing with. I know he has ADD and ADHD but I have always wondered if there is an underlying mood disorder going on. It is so hard to know when there has always been so much going on ie. seizures, food allergies, weaning. Since the seizures started or should I say were confirmed almost 5 years ago, it seems that there are always so many factors to consider when trying to find out what is going on and that is so frustrating about the docs because they just want to give him Ritalin or Risperdal and call it a day. Now that the seizures are gone (knock on wood) I am not opposed to that if it is necessary but I just want to know the true culprit of the issues. Right now I know that the depakote plays a huge part in it but is there any underlying problem as well??? I wonder about food allergies and gluten etc. Well, its comforting to know that we are not alone in this big world and means so much to have the support from all of you! Also, does anyone know of something that works for keeping a child asleep?? Many thanks

Guest guest
, Ariane again. The sleep thing brought back more memories of the wean from hell. Our beach week....Dillon would get up at 2 AM and try to leave the house. We were sure we would find him in the ocean one morning. My husband had to sleep in front of the bedroom door. Dillon (and us) hardly slept at all during the wean. I think it is all related. Take your time and once you are done weaning don't forget it can still take weeks to completely be out of his system. After all that, then see how he is doing. I have twins with ADD and Dillon has shown symptoms of the same BUT only when he is actively seizing, sick, and /or going up and down on meds. It seems there have been very few moments in his life where he is completely stable and at these times he seems like a very normal boy and not ADD at all. I would not add ADD meds to the mix anytime soon. There is a risk of developing tourettes that is slightly increased for kids with a history of seizures. Hang in there:-) Ariane (Dillon,7, ketokid for 2 years now on tegretol)

Guest guest
My son is on Adderall for ADHD. Yes, it can lower the threshold for seizures -- all of the stimulants can. We've been fortunate that we've not seen increased seizures with it --- but I would recommend only starting a stimulant when NOTHING else is going on, so you can evaluate if it makes a difference.
