I think you and I are in the same boat with working out, only I used to use much smaller weights. I just can't work out without starting to have ectopics like you describe. I eventually gave up trying, so I don't know a solution to this.

Guest guest
Anyways, I have had atrial fibrillation 2 yrs ago when I started taking a meal replacement supplement called Myoplex made by EAS. When i quit taking that product, I had no more atrial fib ... ------ Roy, I'm afraid I don't have any helpful information for you, but I'm fascinated by this bit of your history. I drink a Myoplex Lite for breakfast every morning after an hour of swimming laps, and have gone from a ten-hour afib episode every week to nothing for five weeks since I started this regime. Did your doctors give you any idea what about the Myoplex was triggering your a-f? When the atria is fibralating the ventrical beat is only picked up eratically hence the skippped beat.Right now you may convert on your own soon after you stop execising. That may change if you continue to provoke episodes. " Exercised inducced Afib " is both common and epidemic. Weight lifting is one of the worst causes of the problem as things like dead lift tend to raise the heart rate to very hight levels . I do not know if the suplement caused the initial problem or not. It is a serious risk to continue to push yourself into Afib. If you can keep it at-bay for a number of years that would be best. Get a heart rate monitor to keep your rate down much below the numbers your are experiancing .Talk to your cardiologist about this soon. Don't drink alcohol! when the heart rate stays high and many skipped beats occur that is not an ecopic beat . This is important for everyone to know . PAC's and ectopic beats are occassional . " Afib is irregularly, irregular "

For the person that asked me about the Myoplex specifically, the doctors were pretty baffled because there is no stimulants in it. One did tell me though that if the chemical is less than 2% of the makeup of a substance, the maker is not required to put the chemical on the label or something like that. I am pretty sure it was the myoplex causing my problmes before because I NEVER had anything happen to me until i started taking that stuff. The very first time i had a problem, it was right after a cardio workout. I was calm after taking a shower etc, and my heart went from at rest to well over 200BPM. It stayed there for about 30 seconds then calmed down. By the time i got to the ER they couldn't see anything at all. Second time it happened was 3 days later after i weightlifted (3 hours afterward) and drank a myoplex. Third time it happened was when i was helping someone move, and i had drank a myoplex. After i quit taking the myoplex i had NO problems. This skipping heart beat thing has happened twice in the last 3-4 weeks on me now. , are you saying that this is very dangerou that I could have a heart attack or something? I am worried now. It almost seems like my heart then must be in a minor form of Afib even before i start working out. It doesnt get thrown INTO it when i do squats or deadlifts or somethign. And , most of the workouts I am just fine. I really don't wanna just walk because I am really into fitness now and I want to be able to weightlift and do high intensity stuff. Are you guys thinking that maybe I should go in for ablation? I was scheduled at one time to have an EP done but I ended up not because I am really scared about having to have a pacemaker or something at this young age and I am also very worried about a stroke or something happening to me. If anyone could comfort me it would be appreciated. This is important for everyone to know . > PAC's and ectopic beats are occassional . " Afib is irregularly, > irregular " Some of the things a " fast regular beat " could be is Atrial Flutter or some varient of Tachycardia. All I do know is that Atrial Flutter is *generally* not dangerous however anytime the heart rate is 180 - 200+ for a prolonged period of time in Flutter there is some risk of heart attack at worse. Also, passing out is not uncommon. I was told by an ER doc (I have had one episode of Atrial Flutter) that I should just " head on over " to ER if the flutter didn't go away in 20 minutes but for a young person with no heart damage, I should be able to tolerate it long enough to head to ER without being in a panic. That's just what I've been told, mind you. Also, heart attack is a rare complication of Flutter from what I've heard. But, do get it treated!! > on the label or something like that. I am pretty sure it was the > myoplex causing my problmes before because I NEVER had anything > happen to me until i started taking that stuff. It maybe by the Myloplex. Or - your first few episodes could have been entirely random and the ending of them entirely random - and you just happened to quit Mylopex at the exact right time to make it look like the culprit. The only way to *really* know would be to make a guinea pig of yourself and try provoking AFIB with Myloplex a few times which I do NOT recommend. :) I thought for sure that my AFIB was caused by laying on my left side. So, I stopped laying on my left side... and guess what... I got AFIB laying on my right side. I don't argue there are causes and triggers - and I don't discourage folks from trying to eliminate any in hopes of being AFIB free. But the one thing I've figured out is that AFIB is fairly unpredictable and a person can drive themselves crazy trying to figure out an exact trigger - it's an unprecise science we're practicing at home at best! > This skipping heart beat thing has happened twice in the last 3-4 > weeks on me now. The occasional ectopic beat isn't supposed to be a problem. Especially in a heart that is essentially structurally sound. A person would need *thousands* per day before a doctor would generally become concerned. They are more scary and annoying than medically concerning. > , are you saying that this is very dangerou that I could have a > heart attack or something? I am worried now.< < What little I've read of your situation, I don't think there is a huge risk of it. Though, anytime your heart rate goes 200+ and stays there, I would strongly encourage going to ER to get it down. Are you on any meds to control rates? I have had pretty good luck with Cardizem (calcium channel blocker) to keep my rates low - and it has almost no side effects and no drug toxicity related to it. > It almost seems like my heart then must be in a minor form of Afib > even before i start working out. It doesnt get thrown INTO it when > i do squats or deadlifts or somethign. And , most of the workouts I > am just fine. I have read somewhere that it is common to throw ectopic beats *after* a workout. > I really don't wanna just walk because I am really into fitness now > and I want to be able to weightlift and do high intensity stuff.< < Well, I'd find a doctor/EP who will work *with* you for your health goals. I think it is entirely possible to keep working out - I think the suggestion to " walk " was encouraging you to explore some less intense ways to stay aerobically in shape until you come up with the right combination of doctor, meds and long term therapy to allow you to live a nearly-normal life that includes all of your fitness goals. > Are you guys thinking that maybe I should go in for ablation? < < Personally, I'd urge *anyone* who has minor symptoms (ie: parox but not chronic) of AFIB to wait 5 - 10 years for the ablation revolution to become perfected. There is still a 1% rate of complications, some of which are life threatening (stroke, heart attack during the procedure, stenosis of the vein, etc) and the cure is still seen somewhere in the 80% range. (Some report higher, obviously, but on average I think 80% is at least somewhat realistic.) > I was > scheduled at one time to have an EP done but I ended up not because > I am really scared about having to have a pacemaker or something at > this young age and I am also very worried about a stroke or > something happening to me. < < Seems it makes sense to wait a few years. At least that what I would tell any loved one in a similar situation. Again, what drugs are you taking? I think you might get some relief that route. Good luck. I would suggest you write down all your questions and schedule another appointment with your doctor/EP and not leave his office until you have a more clear idea of your options. If you don't quite like his answers or he is not giving you some clear paths to work with, consider a second opinion. I wouldn't rush an ablation, *generally* this is left until after drug therapy has failed - as drug therapy is still statistically safer than the ablation procedure. Guest guest
Thanks Joceyln for your reply. I have several responses to your post. I am right now taking 20mg propanolol (inderal) twice a day. I really wanted off of this as ive been taking it since i had a first problem 2 years ago. Let me walk you through exactly what happened to me, because maybe I haven't made it very clear, as i tried to give a quick view over what happened. First, when ive been experiencing these 3 beat normal, 1 beat skip sessions during when my heart rate is elevated, my heart rate is not over 180. It is usually between 140-180 or so, somewhere in there. Genreally that is because I am doing intense lifting. Now let me give you the whole thing from start to finish as it happened. I started working out high intensity. I was doing this for 5 weeks, cardio one day, weightlifting the next, etc. I was taking myoplex all this time, and 5 weeks in was when i had that real fast rapid beat. I went into the ER and by the time i got there it was calmed down and there were NO symptoms anything happened. I was cleared to go ahead and continue to work out. So i kept taking the myoplex, and 3 days later, after my weightlifting routine, a good 3 hours after it, i drank a myoplex and probably 5 mins or so later i had my first AFIB incident, which then i went to the ER because my heart rate was bouncing between 120- 200 bpm and beating irregular, not to mention i was scared out of my mind, thought i was gonna die. They saw it this time and admitted me. I was in for 24 hours until it corrected itself. I was on cardizem at the hospital, along with coumadin or something like that for blood clot prevention. I stopped the myoplex at that point and I didn't experience another episode until about 3 months later when i started it up again. I had been drinking it for about 2-3 days when a buddy had me help him move from his house. 3 hours after i got home from helpign him move, i started having another AFIB episode much like the second one, and got admitted again. Again, heart corrected itself afte 24 hours. At that point i quit the myoplex entirely and never really had another incident. I remember one day my heart started beating real hard and at about 130 bpm when i was laying down. I got up and just breathed deep and it went away. At that time, i was buying a house and was really really stressed out that day lol (put my first offer for 120 grand in lol, thats alot of money!). That was the last time i really had a problem at all, but have only been hospitalized twice for afib. So, I tend to try to stay stress free now, and the workouts definitely help with that, because i am stress free now for the most part. If I am actually going into sessions of AFIB when experiencing these skipped beats like i am (twice the past 3 weeks), i wonder if it is the propanolol that is actually keeping my heart rate down and keeping symptoms to a minimum. When it occurs I just feel scared mostly, cuase i don't knwo whats gonna happen. I sometimes feel a little lightheaded, and i get nervous. Now, both times that i have experienced this skipping beat thing, it has been right after a set of doing something that takes alot of energy which is like a squat or a deadlift, in which my heart rate gets up over 130 or 140 and goes possibly as high as 180 or so. This should be normal though, its called WORKING OUT! lol. I should be able to put my heart rate up there during workouts and be safe. But anyway, that is when i really feel the skipped beats. It is a pattern like this " beat beat beat pause beat beat beat pause " . And, that happening with hard beats at a rate of 150 bpm is pretty scary. The first time this happened to me I went ahead with 2 sets of deadlifts, which after i completed both the sets i felt the skipped beats. I then stopped the deadlifts and went on with the rest of my workout (which because i used lesser muscles i didn't get my heart rate up so high so i didn't feel it that much). The second time, i warmed up with squats and only did two heavy reps and then quit working out. I just wanna be sure that I am not running a risk of my heart stopping or something. I was studied at the Univ of Michigan when i had prior AFIB episodes and they said that It was not life threatening and that I could go ahead with weightlifting or wahtever i wanted to do, just to build up to it in intensity (which i did). I have been doing the same intense workouts for a good 6.5 months and have not had any problems up until the last month, during only 2 of my more intense workouts. Now, to make clear, i feel these skipping beats very much when my heart rate is high, but when it calms down like a natural heart does from resting after an intense set of weights or cardio, then I don't really feel the skipped beats. I know it is still skipping a little though becasue if I feel my pulse i can tell. But after I am calm, i don't have anymore symptoms. So that is the story. I apprecaite any more advice or ideas. Thanks.
