If you're regularly eating fatty meats like bacon and hot dogs, watch out! It could lead you down the road to adult diabetes, says a new study published in the journal Diabetes Care. Researchers found that women who ate bacon more than twice a week increased their risk of developing diabetes by 17 percent, and those who ate hot dogs twice or more a week increased their risk by 24 percent! That's no surprise! Three slices of bacon contain 7.9 grams of fat and 7 percent of your daily cholesterol intake, while one hot dog has 12.4 grams of fat and 8 percent of your daily cholesterol. Researchers didn't go so far as to say that bacon or hot dogs themselves cause diabetes, but they did say people who ate these foods on a regular basis were probably also eating other unhealthy foods. So what's a bacon or hot dog fan to do? The experts recommend switching to low-fat versions of these meats (such as those made from turkey), eating them only occasionally, and balancing out your diet with lots of healthy food choices like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. You can do it! MEMBERS GET MORE! Find more healthy eating strategies on Austin's Fit Forever! and discover how easy it is to eat right! Sign up today!
