Unfortunately, my son has banned me from using it with him! But I think if we did it more, and he got used to it, it would really help him. <<
Guest guest
His answer to me was " don't use your hands, I don't know that language " . So it's really up to me to just keep doing it so he gets used to it. He just had extensive testing done as part of his 3 year eval., and they told us he's an auditory learner -- prefers to get his info through his ears. So that could be why too. But cued speech would definitely improve his lipreading skills. Guest guest
Actually, due to his age, he will need to be specifically taught the system. had a certified instructor of Cued Speech work with him several times a week at school to teach him how to receptively understand cued speech and how to lipread. She was hired by our county due to his inability to lipread and process cued speech receptively. He didn't understand it either until the system and how to analyze it was specifically taught. He then gradually picked it up until now he can understand cueing with complete voice off. He received this instruction when he was 7 and it made all of the difference in the world for him Re: reading levels of deaf and HOH > > > > I have to say, I learned cued speech last summer, and loved it! > > > > Unfortunately, my son has banned me from using it with him! Ben actually had instruction at the camp, but of course that was only 5 days. The program he is in now is an oral one, and they do not support the use of *any* manual instruction, so I'm sure they wouldn't give him instruction in it! Interestingly, his teacher is certified in cued speech, but she's not allowed to use it...
