Guest guest
http://www.wrightslaw.com/statute.htm As I recall, it's under auxiliary aids and services. I used to keep up on it and have my copy of IDEA handy, but it's buried in the basement currently as I'm working on tax estimations and my daughter's FAFSA for scholarships which is just as hard as doing the taxes. If you want to ask again on Friday, I'll be breathing again. Go to the above link and they have it broken down a bit. Guest guest
Maybe I'm just burned out, but I can't find a section on auxiliary aids. I get so tired of searching these things that I can't focus. Guest guest
It's the section on assistive technology: Sections 300.5 and 300.6. Also relevant is section 300.308. I think it's pretty clearly written if you just go to a copy of the regs. Here's a link to a good site that Kay's site pointed me to: http://www.ideapractices.org/law/regulations/topicIndex.php > Re: IDEA hearing aids - > > > Maybe I'm just burned out, but I can't find a section on > auxiliary aids. Guest guest
, I have never heard of the school district paying for hearing aids - I never knew that was an option. How do we go about forcing the district to do this? Do all states have to follow the IDEA? (Sorry for my ignorance - getting services is still pretty new to me) 's IEP meeting is coming up in a few weeks - what would you suggest I bring with me - with her increased loss she really needs a new set of hearing aids and we're just beginning a battle with our insurance company, but I can hit the district with our request as well. I've had soooo many problems in the past just getting the district to pay for her independent evaluation that I am reluctant to bring up the subject unless I am sure I am fully prepared. Any advice you have would be great. Thanks, Cheryl > http://www.wrightslaw.com/statute.htm > > As I recall, it's under auxiliary aids and services. Guest guest
Hi everyone, Tessa got her hearing aid today. She hasn't responded a whole lot yet, other than trying to yank it out. Anyone got any creative idea's to keep it in. She's only 18 months old yet and has no language skills, so I can't just tell her no, except in sign, which she only understands a little of. Anyhow...all this talk about IDEA and hearing aids, etc is very confusing. I realize now that I am Tessa's best advocate, as so many have said. I asked the audi today about the school systems and what they are required to pay. She basically said that they aren't required to provide hearing aids....but they have to provide everything else. But you all say that they are required to provide hearing aids. How does that work? The audi said that they are required to provide certain things, but that many times they just don't have the money so they bring out a 20 yr old box of aids and FM's....etc. That makes me SO mad. It's very frustrating. Another question....if I tell the early intervention people that I think Tessa will need more work than what they offered, will they give it? They told us she needed one hour a week...however, our audi believes that she needs 5 days a week. The audi is new to the area and Tessa is her first diagnosed child at this practice (though she's been in practice for 20 yrs), so she doesn't know any of the resources...which is SO frustrating! I really want to get better service in all aspects..however, I'm not sure where to start. I've done web searches for our area and turned up nothing. How do you start the process of finding the best resources for your child? Just curious. I appreciate everything. Read everyone's emails is somewhat scary, knowing that I'll have to deal with all of this school stuff in the future, but at least I'll be prepared and have a few years of reading about it under my belt. Thanks again. Lindsi was 18 months old when we got her hearing aids. First, expct tat Tessa will yank them out & then she'll probably pull them apart. Our's are taped at every connection except from the aid to the mold, which she routinely still pulls apart. I found that any length of time in the car seat, led to the destruction of Lindsi's aids. i started putting a head band on Lindsi to hold the aid to her head a little better. As long as you don't cover up the main part of the aid, this worked great. We wore head bands religiously for the frst 2-3 months. Also, I ran embroidery thread (it was handy) from the aid, through a safety pin that I pinned to the back of her shirt. That way, if / when she pulls the aid out of her ear, it doesn't get lost. I have to say....5 months with the hearing aid & Lindsi touches it very little now. Regards, Debby...mom toindsi (23 months)
Guest guest
Hi Sara, My daughter was 18 months old when she got her aids. We had a lot of trouble in the beginning with her pulling out her aids and pulling them apart. It was really frustrating - she'd pull them out all day long. Thanksfully our audi gave us a critter clip - it clips the aids to her clothes so they don't get lost even when they get pulled out. She's still chew on them, but at least we didn't lose them. One of her aids still has teething marks on it from way back when. We made sure that everytime she pulled them out, we put them back in. There was some serious resistance at first, but we made it a point that her aids needed to be worn all the time. The car took some more time. At first, we would leave them out it the car until home use got more stable. Then, again, I just resolved to putting them back in when she pulled them out in the car (even if it meant pulling over while I was driving). Eventually she learned to leave them in in the car. It does get easier - it just takes time and lots of patience. Now is 4 and lets me know to change her batteries and helps put the aids in - she's really grown to accept and appreciate them. only got speech therapy once a week until very recently - I realize now that this was a mistake - we trusted the wrong professionals to tell us what she needed. I think your audi is right, after going for an independent evaluation outside our school district, I was told by several different schools for the deaf that hearing impaired children need intense (usually 5 days a week) speech therapy to catch up and keep up. Especially if she's delayed due to her loss, I would fight for this. Does you state assign an ongoing coordinator for you? We had someone to call who was assigned to to help us work out all the details. I know your audi is new to the area, but perhaps there are other families with hearing impaired children she can put you in touch with. This has been one of our greatest resources. Other parents in your area may be able to reccomend a good speech therapist or TOD to work with Tessa - this is how we found 's individual speech therapist and she's really good. EI should be able to provide you with a list as well. I'm not sure how it works in your state, but in NY the EI program is a lot more friendly and willing to give services than the school districts so don't let all the stories about the school districts discourage you. Here EI's philosophy is it's better to give the child a little more than they need than a little less - I've seen them really stand by that. Well, I hope all this helps.
