I vote for buying him some propane also - kerosene heaters are so very

dangerous in small spaces, and around kids!

I also second the suggestion of asking for help at local churches, the

Salvation Army, or wherever may be appropriate in the area. A shelter may

be the answer, at least for the duration of the cold spell...

I think, Sharon, that the kerosene heaters have been made more safe and efficient, however, I still have heard one must take care with them. I'd suggest looking into a possible battery-operated??? space heater; though I'm not sure there is such an animal out there. Why does he have no electric? Bills not paid? We had a kerosene heater years ago but it was used in the house. I am not sure it would be safe in a motor home. Do you have LIHEAP there? Have him apply there. I know they will give propane because we got it and so did our son next door. Have him call the county to see if there is any help available through them, Salvation Army maybe could help.I will keep them in my prayers.

I do Sharon..

Just bought one for the house here ourselves.. There are all kinds of

space heaters.. not only kerosene.. but propane as well.. (those run off

the little propane tanks that you use with a grill)..

If you go kerosene, you need to find a rectangular or square one.. they

don't get as hot on the sides and back as a round one does.. the boxy

ones can be set closer to a wall than the round ones can.. you'd need to

find the least amount of BTUs.. depending on the size of the motor home..

A motor home is not air tight, so the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning

is fairly low.. and they could always crack the roof vents if worried

about that.. Just have to make sure that the wick on that little heater

is clean and healthy (can't think of the word that goes there).. the

instructions that came with our heater told us to let the thing " burn

out " once every 4th of 5th tank of fuel.. (it hold 1.2 gallons and that

will burn for between 10 and 12 hours)..

My double wide is 28 by 36 actually (they count the 4 foot hitches when

stating dimensions of these things.. I've often argued that's wrong

cause I can't live on a hitch!).. and the heater we just got is 10.5k

BTU.. we had it burning for a couple hours before left to get tires

on the car yesterday morning.. he was gone for about an hour and a

half.. maybe two.. but by the time he got home.. I'd have liked to have

suffocated (not literally) from the heat it had produced.. he actually

had to let the living room door stand open for a few minutes when he got

home to lower the temp in here.. so I could move again..

We bought one for 's niece when she lived in a uninsulated super old

farm house that they could never seem to get the temperature above 50

degrees even with the coal furnace going like a blast furnace.. at least

that way they could keep the temps up a little better in the upstairs..

They have safety shut offs built in them these days.. bump the little

sucker and it makes a loud snapping noise as it immediately extinguishes

itself..

Of course with anything flammable.. you could run into problems if you

don't use common sense around them.. or are not careful about how you do

things with them.. You need to fill the tanks OUTSIDE.. you don't want

to use kerosene that has sat over the summer.. in PA, though I'm sure in

ALL states.. the only thing you can dispense kerosene into is a BLUE

container.. gasoline goes into red.. AND never ever ever ever mix

different types of fuel in that same container..

They wouldn't be able to run the kerosun for extended periods of time in

the motor home anyway.. it would like to roast them clean out of the

place if they did.. AND there really isn't anyway to adjust the amount

of heat one puts out.. you HAVE to keep the wick at a certain burning

level (there's a plate at the top that gets red hot, and the flames from

the wick can't burn above that plate.. or it WILL throw fumes).. so

there isn't any way, to adjust the amount of heat that radiates once

it's running full out (takes about half an hour to get to that point, or

so our manual states)..

And of course the manual states.. don't go to sleep with it burning..

don't leave the room unattended while it's burning and definitely do NOT

leave the house unattended at all while it's burning.. AND to keep a

fire extinguisher nearby..

You said that they have no electric there either, right?.. I was

thinking propane lanterns.. but sez they wouldn't heat the place

enough.. but as I said.. they do make propane heaters as well.. and that

might be something to consider.. but I have no experience with those.. I

know that when we lived in the apartment.. the gal next door to us

bought a couple of them for her apartment.. heat was included in our

rent.. but her apartment never got warm, so she went for propane for

extra heat.. Our apartment controlled the heat.. and unless we had the

thermostat set for 76 degrees minimum in our apartment.. everyone else

froze... Landlord used to get pissed at us for turning it up that high..

but guess what??? (he's also the guy that raised my rent by $40 a

month.. cause I was home all day.. and he paid the electric for our

apartment)

Hope this helped in some manner...

The problem is the propane won't last very long and kerosene would be cheaper for him to refill. He has a motor home with a furnace in it, run by propane. A small tank of propane lasts no more than 3 days. I have heard kerosene heaters are much more economical. Well.. we got this little 10.5k BTU for $120.00.. give or take.. plus tax..

unfortunately.. here.. kerosene is $2.99 per gallon.. though our place

is fairly well insulated.. we're the only house, or pretty much so, in

town that still has snow on their roof... until spring.. so we know

we're not losing heat via the roof.. would be better if the bottom were

closed in.. but unfortunately.. the funding necessary to skirt this

place has yet to appear.. so we use more than most people would.. but

before the price rose like it did.. we were heating, for most of the

months during the winter for about $80 a month..

I don't think you guys pay as much for kerosene way over and down there

as we do here though.. and.. yeah.. one gallon for about 10 hours heat..

isn't too bad.. but if you go that route.. they need to make sure a

window is cracked open or something.. though they aren't air-tight.. I

still worry just a bit about making sure there is some " fresh " air

getting in..

This dad has mental health issues, does not trust authorities, won't go to a shelter (and we have none here anyway:)..... Dad is paranoid but is still as good a dad as he can be. Propane is too expensive for me to afford for him, unfortunately. It would easily cost $150 a month for a tank of propane to keep them warm. I am hoping to find a solution to this problem. As I told n, it has already been 4 degrees here and winter hasn't even started. hugs Sharonjoin me on Facebook:Sharon Mars wobbletowalk@...This email is a natural hand made product. I vote for buying him some propane also - kerosene heaters are so verydangerous in small spaces, and around kids! I also second the suggestion of asking for help at local churches, theSalvation Army, or wherever may be appropriate in the area. A shelter maybe the answer, at least for the duration of the cold spell... in WY"You get a wonderful view from the point of no return..." http://www.flickr.com/photos/liadains_fancieshttp://practical-blackwork.blogspot.com http://practicalblackwork.com-----Original Message-----From: MSersLife [mailto:MSersLife ] On BehalfOf SharonSent: Saturday, December 12, 2009 8:31 PMTo: GroupSubject: any suggestions? family in need I'm trying to figure out what to do to help a family in need.
