Guest guest
I found a new study (July 7, 2004) on PubMed today that seems to say that for fibbers with high blood pressure get better results (more reduction in fib episodes)when their blood pressure is treated with ACE inhibitors than with calcium channel blockers. Here is a tiny URL link: http://tinyurl.com/2eefz H, Charlotte NC 60M, flecainide 150mg x 2, aspirin 325mg

Cardizem for rate control if needed and blood pressure and enalapril (generic vasotec) for blood pressure. The combination seems to be doing the job better for me than either has by itself. I may be the exception, but if I got a better result re AFIB being on an ACE Inhibitor - I can't even imagine what being on a Calcium Channel blocker would have been like. Here is a tiny URL > link: (I tried to upload the full article but it didn't work. If someone is interested I will send it directly.) Journal of the American College of Cardiology Volume 44, Issue 1 , 7 July 2004, Pages 159-164 " Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibition in Hypertensive Patients Is Associated With a Reduction in the Occurrence of Atrial Fibrillation " This study compared ACEIs with CCBs as to their effect on A-fib, and the investigators concluded, " Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition was associated with a reduced incidence of AF for patients with hypertension in a managed care setting. " " The absolute incidence of AF in this cohort of hypertensive patients was 10.6% versus 13.0% at six years and 19.4% versus 22.1% at seven years in the ACEI and CCB groups, respectively. " Of the selected patients it is said, " Clinical and demographic characteristics were nearly identical in both groups (Table 1), " yet 19.6% of the CCB group also received BBs while only 15.5% of the ACEI group received BBs. Because BBs can reduce the frequency of A-fibs the higher percentage of patients in the CCB group receiving BBs must have had a positive effect on the CCB group, and without this distortion the results would have been even more in favor of the ACEI group. My doc believes ACEIs are benificial. http://tinyurl.com/2jusg > H, Charlotte NC > 60M, flecainide 150mg x 2, aspirin 325mg , you obviously have no problem with the flecainide, but as a precaution, did your doc discuss the use of a negative chronotrop? http://tinyurl.com/yr8xy

The only times they have given me any rate control med (Toprol) was during the course of a conversion from an afib episode. .
