Lucy,

Most of us are not qualified to answer your question. However,

is knowledgeable (check message #13610, he goes under

davidrad01, for his email address). He might be willing to give you

guidance. In the meantime, if I were you, I would contact either of

the following: one of the doctors in the US trials (see menu

in " links " ); one of the doctors in England (see menu in " Files " ); or

DeSmet in Belgium (see menu in " links " ); and get their opinion. They

will probably need to see your x-rays prior to rendering an opinion.

You could overnight your x-rays to them or send them digitally. Good

luck,

Hi Lucy:

I would suggest that you follow the advice below and contact 2

resurfacing MD's immediately so that they can review your X-rays. If

you have alot of acetabular deformity or need repositioning of the

acetabulum (if your leg is short), you may need to contact one of the

physicians outside of the US who are using the BHR device. Currently

that is the only one with a special acetabular component which can be

fixed in place with a screw, until the bone grows into it.

Thanks for the vote of confidence , but I am just a surface

hippy-to-be, who happens to be a radiologist.

Good Luck, Lucy

,

It's just the truth. Surfacehippy-to-be aside, you have knowledge to

share and you do so in a very generous manner. At a time when people

are feeling most vulnerable and not knowing what is the best choice

to make, I have seen you care enough to provide clarity and a boost

of confidence. Your kind spirit is making a difference in people's

lives. Thank you. Hugs,

I am going to Dr. Vail at Duke (1hr. 15 min from my home by car). He

is participating in the Conserve + trial (continuing access

phase). No, I do not have insurance approval yet. My surgery is

scheduled for March 31, 2003. I have spoken to 4 patients who had

resurfacing by Dr. Vail and all are satisfied.

By the way, I have mean't to comment that if insurance doesn't cover

all or part of the procedure, the costs qualify for a medical

itemized deduction on income tax (in the US of course). I haven't

looked it up yet, but I think that you add up all medical expenses

and subtract 2.5% of net taxable income. I'm certain that this will

trigger lots of comments with the exact answer.
