Guest guest
Bonni, We spent many days in the first year of 's life at the hospital. We became very friendly with the staff and many parents too who were spending equal amounts of time at the hospital. goes to Yale in CT and they have a program that brings children from over sees to the hospital in order to offer a surgery. Each doctor is individual so they may do things differently. One case in particular: the child was getting the same cleft lip and palate surgery at the same time as . This family was from Egypt. The family was sponsored by the hospital to make the trip. If memory serves me it was a fund set aside just for this type of thing. We have a house near the hospital called the Mc house that houses families who's children are having surgeries. This family stayed for 4 months. Housing was free and arrangements were made for food. The hospital may have absorbed most of the cost for housing. Your friend might start researching if the hospital offers any type of grant program. I know as part of this program the news people were involved. It was highly publicized. Wish your friend Good Luck. Ellen mom to

Guest guest
Bonni, We are in Cincinnati and see several doctors at Cincinnati Children's. We've seen Dr. Cotton a couple of times. Our daughter has not had a trach, so we don't have any experience there. However, I do know that Dr. Cotton is considered one of the world's experts on trach/airway issues, and families come from all over the U.S. and other countries for his services. We've met a couple other CHARGE families who've come here to see him. There is a very nice Mc House right next door to Children's Hospital where families can stay long-term. If you go to http://www.rmhcincinnati.org/, you can read more about it. They have a dining room there, and I believe they serve meals to guests. The hospital also has a nice cafeteria with lots of options. If you go to http://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/visit/travel/contact.htm, you'll find a toll-free phone number and email address of Guest Services, a department at the hospital that can help you with transporation and lodging arrangements, etc. If there's anything I can do to help--phone calls I can make, any additional info you need, etc.--feel free to contact me directly. Guest guest
Good luck with everything!! I dont live near Cincinnati so I have never been to that doctor but I am sure you found your angel there. As for expensies since its a childerns hospital check and see if there is a ronald mcdonalds house near by to help with room and board. I knoe the childerns hospital we go to has one and as for food, ours gives us a discount on food at the hospital. I cant think of anything else right now but I hope I helped somewhat. Guest guest
Bonni, Dr. Cotton is well known for tracheal reconstructions. I think it will depend upon why Cherise has her trach as to if he'll be able to remove it. Sometimes our kids have things that require a trach no matter how good the doctor is. The other thing that I would say is that it is very easy to focus on the fact that your child has a trach and the goal of getting it removed (believe me, I know as Carmen has a trach and is 20 months old). However, there are so many issues involved with our kids, and getting the trach out does not solve those issues. Even with the trach out, our kids will have many challenges. The trach is a pain for us as parents, but it is necessary for Carmen because of multiple airway issues. We will be very happy when it comes out, but that doesn't make everything else go away. Without a trach, Carmen would not be alive today, so we have to (as crazy as it sounds) see the trach as a helpful tool. I hope that Cherise does get her trach out, but I would make sure that your friend realizes the big picture also, so that her hopes aren't solely on the goal of the trach being removed. It is a very complicated process that requires lots of things going right and a while of monitoring, capping the trach, etc. So, it won't happen quickly (or at least I don't think it does), so please make sure Cherise's mama is prepared for that--I hate for her to be let down when she realizes the full process. Take care!!
