Guest guest
you can't get frustrated in just a week, its now allowed Some kids respond immediately, a lot don't, give it time, its a big metabolism change. The constipation could be part of the seizure problem. A lot of centeres recommend mineral oil or original flavour Milk of Magnesia. Both should work but I consider them short term fixes, wouldn't want to use them long term. Better solution for a lot of kids is increased magnesium. You should be using a calcium supplment with magnesium, try to get at least a 2:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium, some even have to go up to a 1;1 ratio. And if you he is on any drugs, remember, that can effect the diet too Good luck , 's mom kcyah2003 wrote: > My son is 9 months old. Guest guest
I'm kinda repeating some of what just said.... Constipation is common in the beginning. Magnesium supplements have worked well for many kids....... he should have been prescribed a calcium/magnesium supplement, since this diet doesn't contain many good calcium sources on it's own..... but many of us have chosen to increase the magnesium dosage a bit more than the docs suggest.... because it truly does help things moooooove. Magnesium citrate is the form I prefer to use, because it's supposedly more absorbable. Also....... did you know that apple can be naturally binding? (Meaning.... it can increase constipation. ) I don't know how you'd be able to include enough prunes to make a difference ...... they would certainly be pretty high in carbs with all the natural sugars. If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about using a glycerin suppository a couple of times a week at this point. It will be OK to do that. Obviously, you want a better solution in the long run but the constipation probably won't be as bad after some time goes by.... and you make a few of the other suggested changes. As far as seizure control.... Absolutely, YES..... there are plenty of families that have been on this list that didn't get immediate control.... and had to fine-tune the diet, reduce or eliminate meds, etc..... before finally getting the full benefit of the diet. Don't give up hope! Is your son still on seizure meds? The darn drugs can sometimes really get in the way of successful control on the Keto diet. If he is, be watchful for any signs of toxicity..... since the diet changes the way meds are metabolized. One symptom of med toxicity with some of the drugs is, believe it or not, increased seizures. This is a big change for your child's body...... he may need some time to adjust. How is he feeling otherwise? What is his ratio? Patti, mom to Katera, age 7, former Keto Kid...... possible future re-Keto Kid. new to ketogroup /natural laxatives? My son is 9 months old. He started the keto diet last Monday and I haven't noticed any changes in his seizure activities. The two on- duty doctors while was in the hospital mentioned most kids they've observed had an immediate response to the diet. I had such high hopes. Guest guest
My daughter seemed to be very constipated once we started the diet (August 2003). Her dietician at s Hopkins recommended MiraLax, it's a prescriptin laxative - powder form. Mehra is 14 months old and weighs approx. 21 pounds - we give her 1 teaspoon per day which seems to regulate her bowel movements. It does take a couple of days when you first start, but seems to work great for her. She is no longer irritable. > I'm kinda repeating some of what just said.... > > Constipation is common in the beginning. Guest guest
/Patti/Mehra's mom- Thank you so much for your responses. is on a 2.75 to 1 ratio. His ketone level fluctuates from having no traces to moderate/large (using urine ketostix) throughout the day. Is this large fluctuation normal? I've noticed postings mention testing blood ketone? Is that more accurate? He does seem to be a little more lethargic than before the diet, but we do expected that. His appetite is good-- gobbles up everything (75% of RDA calories) and preferring fresh food to jar food. He was recently weaned off of Keppra because it doesn't seem to help him any. He is on Klonopin 1.75mg/day and lamictal 50mg/day. I will give the calcium + magnesium a try for his constipation. -kieu, mom to . > I'm kinda repeating some of what just said.... > > Constipation is common in the beginning. Guest guest
Hi Kieu, my daughter Kristan was 9 months old too when she started the diet. She is mostly formula fed. We use Milk of Magnesia (MM) to help with her bowel movements and we also have added in MCT oil which also helps. Prior to the MCT oil even with the MM sometimes Kristan wouldn't go until 3-4 days later. Also, I believe the standing we have started with her helps her to go regularly. Maybe you could ask about the MCT oil. I don't like giving Kristan the MM but if she goes regularly then it's worth it as her seizures are down when she has regular bowel movements. When Kristan started the diet we had also stopped the meds just prior to starting the diet and her seizures were down to about 5-6 a day and stayed pretty much there for a few weeks, so I think the diet helped her but it also could have been from stopping the meds. Kristan used to have 150-200 seizures a day and the drugs just made her worse. We don't have total control yet, but I believe the diet is helping her, it takes time and patience and a lot of fine tuning. Like you, I was hoping for immediate control, but with some kids it just takes time. Kristan's ketones are usually all over the place, we've never had large ketones, but lately I have noticed she does better when her ketones are low. She's a mystery. Hang in there, it takes time. Satnam, mom to Kristan, 16 months Keto kid since August 2003 > My son is 9 months old. He started the keto diet last Monday and I > haven't noticed any changes in his seizure activities.
