Adaptive technology (Visual aids: Portable scanner)

Hi ive been thinking of some of the adaptive tech the college has

recomended. One peice was a portable scanner. Now I wonder, just how

big are these " scanners " . Considering I would only be able to use it if

i had a laptop i kinda dont see the point. Specialy since i have a

scanner that fits on my computer desktop. Id use that scanner if I had

more desk space.

My question is, how small are these portable scanners? How portable is

it if i have to lugg all my adaptive tech stuff with me? Are portable

scanners really worth using my limited grant money on, specialy if i

have a normal scanner at home?
