Hey all, been awhile....

I have a quick question for those that are Stage IV - have you had a

colonoscopy since diagnosis (or since surgery) ? How often is your doc

recommending

that you have them?

Just trying to make sure my doc is doing right.

Love and prayers to all,

Terry in GA

Hi Terry,

It's great to see you back!!! The first Oncologist recommended

every three years for . It was only a year because he was

having so much pain . They just tried to do another a couple of

months ago which would be 2 years from the last one. He was not

able to go thru the rectum, even with a pediactric scope and aborted

it from that end. He then went thru the stoma and found a polyp

which he removed. Biopsy showed it to be non malignant.

That makes a total of 2 polyps in 3 1/2 since his surgery.

Hope this helps,

Joyce

I had before surgery (how they discovered) and then surgery.

According to my surgeon, the normal thing is to do a follow up

colonoscopy one a year after surgery and once a year thereafter as

well. I'm a stage IV, but I don't think the stage impacts on how

often it is done, assuming one is healthy enough to have it done.

Hey Terry...it's nice to hear from you again.

While Bert is not stage IV, he's stage III, his oncologist

recommended yearly colonoscopies for the first five years (what is it

with this 5 year bench mark). He had one today, his first since

surgery back in July of 2003. It was scheduled because although all

scans, including Pets have shown no evidence of disease, Bert's CEA

has remained between 5.9 and 8.2...so his oncologist wanted to be

safe than sorry insisted on doing one, even though Bert is still on

chemo. Many don't even have one until they are off chemo.

Last October, when I had my first colonoscopy and they found three

pre-cancerous polyps, I was told that I would need to have another

one in a year...if that was okay, than two years...if that was okay,

than five year intervals. So I guess it varies for folks but my

personal opinion, have one as many times as you can...not every three

four months, noooooo, but at least once a year for a while. Again,

that's my opinion.

Hugs,

Monika
