Actually , under the law, you can't specify a specific system though

you can specify a wireless fm system. You can battle on this, but if

they're willing to write wireless fm system, I'd go for it and save my

energy for more important instructional goals.

continuing IEP

with things unresolved, but mostly moving in the right direction. I came

down with a sinus infection right after and haven't been able to follow up

here as I would have liked. However, I've been mulling a few things over

and would love some more help if possible!

equivalent and how to really test for it. Last time around we had some

the TOWL (test of writtten language). The team tried to drop the writing

goal based on her average-high average scores on the test. There are about

10 sub-categories and in 2 she scored 25%....a big discrepancy between the

other categories. They claimed this was still in " normal " range. I argued

that the classwork and work at home supported the areas of weakness at 25%

and they " indulged " me by keeping the goal. However, is it smart to

continue these means of assessment - some subjective with one standardized

test? Should the language read " at a certain percentile " ?

made (preferrential seating, regular feedback, consultation with HI and SPL,

etc.) However, the team would not put " Phonax Microlink wireless FM - mlx "

on that page and claimed we should put it on another page where we add

" additional information " . They didn't want to be locked into one system in

case " a better system " could be used. We said we didn't want a better

system - because this one has worked well for Maggie - and since we all

agree on that there should be no argument over it being an accomodation.

They made us table it til the next meeting and suggested that it might be an

issue that we brought to " the next level. " They claim that the " county

doesn't want us to put a specific device on the accomodation page. " We said

that raised red flags for us and that it seemed only right that it belonged

there.....

, in regards to the " Maggie will " statements that are on your IEP with no

percentage of how she will do. I want to make a comment that will probably help

you out. They usually use that sort of basic statement as a goal, however there

are ways of changing it to be more appropriate, if you feel that is too easy for

her to make any improvement but she is doing it, you can say Maggie will do

----- at an age appropriate level, or if you feel it is too hard then you can

say Maggie will make some improvement in ------. Do you understand? They will

always start it with she will but you can manipulate it to be more appropriate

for her or more attainable. In our IEP we were talking about improving signs

and signing new signs. We didn't just put will improve his signing skills

or will sign, we said will sign 5 new words by the end of the year,

and will respond to 5 different sign commands by the end of the year.

Seeing how they are using picture board communication with him for him to choose

his own things, they are not working on him signing. So they are not following

the IEP in that they are working only on him responding to signs and then

instead of him signing they are working on him responding to pictures which is

not ok in my book. That could help for somethings like sequencing but not as a

form of communication for him in general. Anyway I hope that helps you to

better break things down and get more spacific with it.
