I have had paroxysmal afib for at least 20 or more years, and it is less frequent now than at any time in the past 20 years. That's improvement, not deterioration! It doesn't happen for everyone that way, but for some there are steps to be taken that can improve afib. Also, my older brother has had afib for at least forty years with permanent afib for the past 20-30 years. He lives a normal, active life in permanent afib and has no intention of dying in the near future.:-) He also believes that the reason he was in permanent afib by my age while I am improving at that same age is that he drank excessive alcohol whereas I have never drunk alcohol. Also, I have had the benefit of beta blockers over the past 14 years as well as changes in diet and lifestyle to help me avoid my brother's situation so far. Don't worry. You can live a long and happy life if you find the right meds, procedures, and life style solutions. It's very hard to avoid worrying about afib, but if I had known in the beginning what I know now, I would not have been so terrified. I hope I can help you dispel some of that terror by telling you of my long experience with afib. Good luck! in sinus in Seattle

Guest guest
I'm definitely in the newbie panic ... how long can one live with intermitent afib (and/or chronic afib if it deteriorates over time)? I'm 37. Is there any possibility I could get another 30 or 40 years of life???? I know it doesn't " kill you " immediately, but is there hope for long term survival? I'm looking for either stats that are helpful or personal stories that can shed light on this. Thanks, Joscelyn
