Guest guest
June - I found this on a website - hope it helps: There are several reasons why steroids might be given during treatment for cancer. Some of these are: to help prevent sickness and nausea as part of the treatment to kill cancer cells to reduce allergic reactions (for example before a platelet transfusion) Best,
Guest guest
June, I forgot to mention that I had no problems with the steriods - a little "hyper," but that's about it. I tend to agree with you about all these medications and ask questions as soon as a new one is prescribed. Best,
Guest guest
Hi June, I had an IV push that only took about 5 min and did not have steroids but I know there are ladies here that have talked about them. I wouldn't think the dr would give you anymore meds than what you need. But its always best to ask if you are questioning something. I will keep good thoughts for you. I had accidentally sent this to just one person, I thought I had sent it tothe list:Thursday is my next round of chemo. Many of you probably know this alreadybut, they give me a drip of 2 anti-nausea medications before injecting thechemo. One of them is a steroid and I've heard others here talk about it.Has anyone ever tried not doing the steroid? I'm seriously consideringasking the Onc if we can do without that one. This may sound weird to someof you but I just feel like I have enough poisons going into my system, do Ireally need to deal with the side effects of steroids too. But I don't wantto get really sick either. I wonder if I tried doing without the steroidwhat would happen?LICSJune"The best protection any woman can have...is courage." Guest guest
Thanks nne. I'm very suspicious of doctors and I have a tendency to believe that there are times when they do give more than is needed. Sometimes it's to err on the side of caution, sometimes it's just because it's what the AMA or pharmaceutical companies recommend as the best course of action. I often try to research as best I can, outside what the doctor is telling me, about what it is I am taking and if there is a good strong reason behind it. For instance, I had 2 doctors really try to push HRT on me over the last 5 years because my PMS was so bad, this is even with the knowledge that it increased the risk of breast cancer and knowing I was a smoker. Why would they push something that would increase my risk of cancer??? So I'm very skeptical and need to find out more by my own research. Anyway, I'm off point. Steroids have lots of problems, lots of drawbacks. I might regret it but I think I'd like to try doing a round of chemo without the steroid, just the one anti nausea med that is not a steroid, and see how I do. If I get really sick then I'll go back to the steroid. If I don't then I'll continue without it. But I want to know what other people's experience with it have been. Guest guest
June, I don't have link to where I found that info (I believe it was in a childhood cancer website believe it or not), but here is a very interesting website: http://www.eyesontheprize.org/FAQ/tx/chemo.html Although it is primary a gynecological cancer website, I've tapped into the chemo portion - you may find this interesting. I'll keep searching for you for more info. We can never be TOO smart! Best,

Guest guest
If there's one thing I don't need it's to be more hyper, LOL. I mean, I do get tired in the afternoon but my mind is always racing. I don't like that hyper feeling but I didn't feel hyper from my last dose of steroids before chemo. ;-) LICS June "The best protection any woman can have...is courage."
