Hi and welcome. I'm a UU and have a 16 month old DS (so I can

imagine that we're both doing a lot of running these days! It's a

riot, isn't it?) I saw a regular OB throughout my pregnancy. This

was a difficult decision for me. I don't have any real advice for

you, but just wanted to share my experience.

My OB had only ever had one other UU patient, so I did have some

reservations about the whole situation. I had a very close

relationship with her and decided that I wanted to continue as her

patient. I saw her throughout my pregnancy, but I also consulted

with a perinatologist. I saw the peri every 2-3 weeks for an u/s to

measure my cervical length. My OB was always the first one that I

called with questions, problems, whatever...I think because she had

limited experience with MAs, she was more cautious with me. I liked

this approach, so it was a good situation for me.

My OB also originally said we'd do bedrest at 20 weeks. In my case,

I didn't even make it that long. I had been having spotting and

cramping, went into L & D to find that I was having uterine

irritability, and was put on bedrest and PTL drugs at 18 weeks.

(And that's where I stayed for 4 1/2 months!!) It worked wonders

for me, though. DS wasn't born until 36 weeks.

I'd probably ask for u/s more frequently than 4-6 weeks....it seems

like 2-3 weeks is pretty standard-especially through the 2nd

trimester. I had asked both my OB and peri about home monitoring,

but it wasn't something that they felt was a necessity. My peri

said that he couldn't even get an insurance company to cover it for

quads! I know how scary it is...there would be times I'd think I

was having contractions every 15 minutes, arrive at L & D and they'd

be 2 minutes apart. It is so hard to tell what was going on-very

frustrating.

>Oh, and bedrest in 8 weeks...I will

> only be 20w! How do you take care of a 17mos old??

I understand your worries! We're actually ttc again and I have no

idea how I will do it if a second pregnancy would be like my first.

Do you have family close by? It does seem pretty early if you

aren't having any problems. Maybe you'll do just fine and it won't

be necessary.

I wish you all of the best of luck.

Take care,

UU, 30

DS (8-31-03)
