You're not suppressing the pituitary gland. You're suppressing the thyroid so that the pituitary stops asking the thyroid for more hormone (what TSH does). > More so- I just read (on line) that T3 only is a > NO NO for pregnancy and my #1 goal right now is > to get pregnant. Guest guest
Hi Rainbow: http://www.altsupportthyroid.org/treatment/hypomed.php#t3 Hopefully that link will take you to the page that discusses Hypo Meds. Here is the portion about T3- I cut / pasted it- but if you to the link it should appear in a nice easy to read chart. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Synthetic T3 (T-3) Some brand names Cytomel (the US and Canada), Tertroxin (the UK), Cynomel (France). Pharmaceutical names Triiodothyronine, liothyronine, liothyronine sodium. Hormone content T3 only. Uses Usually in combination with synthetic T4; occasionally, as a treatment in itself. Availability Not available in all countries or at all pharmacies. Physician knowledge Despite the large number of medical articles on this topic, it can be difficult to find a doctor who is willing to prescribe T3 in addition to T4. Dietary considerations Cytomel (and possibly other brands) contains lactose as a filler. Stability No known problems. Adjustment flexibility When taking both synthetic T4 and T3 as separate pills, the ratio of T3 to T4 can be adjusted. However, the absorption of T4 is so variable (from 40 to 72 percent) that the ratio cannot be said to be constant. Occasionally, T3 is used as a treatment in itself. Other advantages For many patients, taking T3 in addition to T4 has relieved symptoms of hypothyroidism that wouldn't disappear on T4 alone. Other disadvantages T3 is faster acting than T4, so patients usually take it two or more times a day to avoid having their energy levels crash when the effects of T3 wear off. (However, timed-release T3 is also available.) Pure T3 cannot be used by itself during pregnancy. Much of the fetus depends on a good supply of T4. Those taking synthetic T3 with T4 need to take two types of pills and have two prescriptions filled instead of just one. ------------------------------------------------------------------ I appreciate you challenging me- because I need to hear from people who have forged the path ahead of me- I know we are all different though - so that's why I think we can only predict for some people what should happn by folloing a certain course. The TSH is a pituitary hormone though- so wont its suppression have some down side? Thanks for your reply. > > > BUT- whe I told her - and even heard myslef say it > > out loud- it does seem counter inituitve to supress > > the tSH to nothing- that has to have some negative > > effects elsewhere- it's the master gland0 the pituitary..... > > You're not suppressing the pituitary gland. Guest guest
> http://www.altsupportthyroid.org/treatment/hypomed.php#t3 Interesting. I wish they had links to research supporting their claim that the fetus needs T4. I'd like to know the science behind it. > I appreciate you challenging me- because I need to > hear from people who have forged the path ahead of > me- I know we are all different though - so that's > why I think we can only predict for some people what > should happn by folloing a certain course. I agree that we're all different, and if you feel good taking iodine, I don't think that will undo the good of the T3-only protocol. At least, I haven't heard anyone say that iodine is a cause of RT3. And you've come this far - I would think it would be worth it to stick it out another 6 weeks to see if it ends up making a difference for you. Otherwise you'll always wonder. Right? > The TSH is a pituitary hormone though- so wont its > suppression have some down side? I'll have to rely on the mods to answer this one. I'm really not sure. ~Rainbow~ 30 year old Female 5'6 " 136lbs Dx: Hashi's, AF, Wheat Sensitivity Rx/OTC: Cynomel 50mcg, HC 27.5mg, Florinef 1tab, Potassium 13,500mg, Sea Salt 1 & 1/2tsp My Log: http://tinyurl.com/pvgjmb My Blog: http://hyporainbow.wordpress.com
Guest guest
>Interesting. I wish they had links to research supporting their claim that the fetus needs T4. I'd like to know the science behind it. I've skimmed this and not read it thoroughly http://www.thyroidmanager.org/Chapter14/14-text.htm But it seems the placenta can metabolise T4 into T3, whether it has to is another matter. This quote is interesting >ntal metabolism of thyroid hormones > >The placenta contains high concentrations of the Type 3 or inner-ring (5) iodothyronine deiodinase 56-58. The inner-ring deiodination of T4 catalyzed by this enzyme is the source of high concentrations of reverse T3 present in the amniotic fluid. Reverse T3 levels parallel maternal serum T4 concentrations 59-62. This enzyme may function to reduce the concentration of T3 and T4 in the fetal circulation (the latter being still contributed by 20-30 % from thyroid hormones of maternal origin at the time of parturition), although fetal tissue T3 levels can reach adult levels due to the action of the Type 2 deiodinase (see Chapter 15) 50. The Type 3 deiodinase may also indirectly provide a source of iodide to the fetus via iodothyronine deiodination. However, despite the presence of placental Type 3 deiodinase in circumstances in which fetal T4 production is reduced or maternal free T4 markedly increased, transplacental passage occurs and fetal serum T4 levels are about one third of normal 63. Thyroxine is also detectable in amniotic fluid prior to the onset of fetal thyroid function 64. Have a read and see if you can make sense of it. I'll have a closer look another time Nick
Guest guest
I also want to get pregnant and also, like you, have been trying to get well for quite a while (more than one year and a half). I haven't yet tried T3 only, but Armour hasn't been the solution for me. I am terrified T3 only will not work either and also the pregnancy issue worries me a lot... and I am soon 41! I will read the link in nick's e-mail and try to get as much information as possible. > > Hi Nick and Val and my other RT3 warriors: > I am nervous that I am doing more harm than good on my T3 only mission. > > It's been 6 weeks and I am inching towards 150mcg Cynomel- I have cytomel too- so sometimes they are combined. > > My temps are pretty stable when I remember to check them. > > My former dosage of NT was 5 grains + 40mcg SRT3. > It was backed down to 4grains by my idiot doctor- but I dont know if that was the real issues for the backslide- I think it was when NT went bye-bye- and I was relying on compounded meds which in my experience are unreliable. > > I am EXHAUSTED... Guest guest
READ the date on any research that tells you a fetus needs T4. I am betting it is over 15 year sold, maybe 20. Or cop[ied form that material. Back then they thought T3 did not cross the blood/brin barrier nor the placental barrier. NOW thye knwo it does. MOST doctors ar3 not UTD with this new material..15-20 years being VREY new to get study material in to their actul practices. -- Artistic Grooming- Hurricane WV http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HypoPets/
Guest guest
BTW the over supressed TSH when you asre stil hypo simply menas your body is not able to USE the T3 yet which we already know. Once the RT# is forced out of the receptors, the TSH cn actuall ycome up. Mine did. Mine was .015 while bringing T3 uo but once the resptors cleared it went to .15 which is acceptable to me. We WANT a supressed TSH that is the only way to stop our own thyroids from making T4 and thus more RT3. -- Artistic Grooming- Hurricane WV http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HypoPets/

Guest guest
ONE more thought. When TSH is supressed it does NOT supress the pituitary, just productin of TSH. If your ferritin is low it ALSO supresses the TSH aw once again your body cannto utilize thyroid properly. I have seen some folks wiht very low cortils that also had an overly supressed TSH too. -- Artistic Grooming- Hurricane WV http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HypoPets/

With that previous dose not working you will almost certainly have RT3 blocking receptors. If you stay at this dose of T3 you will get more hypo until the 11-12 week mark when the resistance will suddenly clear, it sounds improbably but I went through what you did and it worked just as Val said it would You can carry on upping the dose of T3 while this is clearing as long as you have no adverse symptoms and will feel less hypo while it's clearing. Just keep an eye on your pulse after the 10 week mark and be prepared to drop dose by half overnight. For me I needed 12 grains of old Armour to feel well. When I went to T3 only I ramped up and ended up on 225-250 a day and felt good on that. One day I woke up with a fast pulse and a temperature, took 50 that day and build up to 125 over a week or so and feel the best I have for 35 years now, having been on Armour for the previous 10 years. I've increased slightly for the winter and expect to drop again in the summer. Have patience, it works. Nick.

Guest guest
Hi Nick: I am inching up- at about 150mcg now- seems best if a multi doese every 2-3 hours- especially since the amount keeps getting bigger- I dont want my body to have to deal with more than say 50mcg at any one time. 50mcg seems good for the 1st dose- as my cortisol is highest then. I do read all the posts and I do believe you and Val- it's the exhasustion that seems to plague me and make me freak out. As an aside- I feel better adding Standard Process (Iodomere- in the past) Organically Bound Minerals = 250 mcg Iodine Dried Alfalfa juice 295mg kelp 95mg And in pretty high doses- like 10 at a time which would be @ 2-3 MG iodine- maybe 2-3 timesr per day- NOWHERE near the 50mg+ that the iodine devotees take. Interstingly enough my doc- who does prescribe dessicated and even T3 to be used WITH it said Iodoral was great- and that most people feel best with 3 tabs daily = 37.5 mg Iodine. Then again- she freaked about T3 only... and often left off important blood work that I had to fill in myslef- so I dont give her too much credit. Anyway- still marching forward with T3- I think the bits of iodine are something I need. > > >I think that summarizes my total freak out. Guest guest
Hello : I am 42....so I hear you... the time is NOW to get things optimized. I really do not want to add all sorts of OTHER hormones to the mix with IUI's or IVF or any of that if I can avoid it. Despite being 42 and having thyroid issues- I am very young looking, work out, eat low carb organic foods.
I just dont have YEARS to figure this out anymore > > > > Hi Nick and Val and my other RT3 warriors: > > I am nervous that I am doing more harm than good on my T3 only mission. Guest guest
Hi Val- My ferritin is on the high side- my cortisol- hanging in- tho I worry that the T3 only protocal is taxing...and I should get another saliva test soon. Thanks for explaining that my suppressed TSH is not killing my pituitary ..... > > ONE more thought. When TSH is supressed it does NOT supress the > pituitary, just productin of TSH. If your ferritin is low it ALSO > supresses the TSH aw once again your body cannto utilize thyroid > properly. Guest guest
>I am inching up- at about 150mcg now- seems best if a multi doese every 2-3 hours- especially since the amount keeps getting bigger- I dont want my body to have to deal with more than say 50mcg at any one time. > >50mcg seems good for the 1st dose- as my cortisol is highest then. You can tolerate more than me then, I single dosed on 25mcg tablets. I still can't take more than 25 at a time. If the iodine works for you then go for it Nick -- for more information on RT3 and Thyroid Resistance go to www.thyroid-rt3.com
