Small diameter heads for THRs evolved many years ago in the early

Charnley hips, as the best way to minimize volumetric wear of the

poly acetabular cups and the associated osteolysis.

Ceramics have the advanatge of producing still less debris than metal

articulations, and debris which is notably well tolerated and inert.

They're also smoother and considered to be more " wettable " and

therefore easier to lubricate, for a given diameter, than other

articulations. They are not reccommended for heavier patients, due to

continuing concerns abou the risk of shattering, and regretably can

not be produced in sufficiently thin moldings to be applied to

resurfacing, as yet. --Griz
