I am 19 years old.when i read your message i just had to tell you....i had lower jaw sugery on june 17 2003 and i am still swollen. it is an awful experience in the hospital with the iv in your arm and your mouth is just so swollen. so far i have lost 10 pounds and i am still on the liquid diet. My mouth was not wired shut but used with rubberbands to keep it shut.the muscles in my face are still very sensitive. I still cannot feel my lips and chin.I hope you really think about this surgery because it was not a pleasant experience for me. -ltay576 > Hi everyone! > > I'm new to this site, and have been anticipating my surgery for the > past couple of months. Guest guest
Hello a! I just wanted to let you know that you WILL be swollen, but not everybody will notice it too much. I am 17 and i had my surgery done on June 23rd (i had upper and lower), 2 weeks and 2 days ago and my swelling has gone down considerably (if you want pictures email me...shoopy109@...). The hospital is not too too terrible, but it isnt the greatest. The IV sucks...but it's only for 2 or 3 days tops. The pain ....well, to be honest, i didnt have ANY pain except for the IV. I never had to take the pain medication except for one night (i think it was a 5 days after the surgery) when my ear was hurting soo much....but other than that...i was great. I lost 10 pounds but since i am allowed to eat i am slowly gaining it back (which is sad to me, lol). I have minimal feeling in my chin and lower lip but otherwise i am doing pretty good! Right now, i am basically back to my old self. I am singing and dancing and talking and stuff like that with minimal problems. When i talk though, it sorta sounds like i have cotton balls in my mouth, but...what do you expect? I just got jaw surgery! All in all...i am pretty happy with the results...although sometimes i " hit a wall " and i just get really upset and want my " old face back " ...but...yeah. It happens to the best of us. Guest guest
You can read some past posts about peoples' experiences here (including mine, which was upper/lower/genio 10 months ago) http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/ click on PERSONAL SURGERY EXPERIENCES. There are also some lists of things to ask your surgeon and things to have on hand during your recovery in the SURGERY FAQs and RECOVERY FAQS. The more you know about what is going to happen post-op, the easier it will be. You may not have the same experience as others, but at least you won't be frightened or worried that something's going wrong. For example, I was worried I wouldn't be able to breathe post- op, but I remembered someone's advice not to panic, took stock in my situation - I could breathe a bit through my nose, breathe a bit through my mouth, and gee, they won't unhook the breathing stuff if I'm having trouble breathing, so I must be ok. And I was. By the end of the day of surgery, I was walking around the halls telling the nurses I was ready to go back to work. > Hi everyone! > > I'm new to this site, and have been anticipating my surgery for the > past couple of months.
