Guest guest
we opted against amnios for both my pregnancies because of the risk to the fetus...in my case, because i had no other genetic risk factors other than age, the risk of miscarriage from an amnio was HIGHER than the risk of having a genetic defect...since we knew we would not abort for anything except extrememe physical defect that could be determined via an ultrasound, it seemed pretty short-sighted to take a higher chance of killing the baby just " so we would know what to expect. " i was 35 when i delivered my first baby and 38 for my second, so i was offered an amnio both times. instead, we chose to do the special, in-depth ultrasound, where they do all kinds of measurements, etc., that assess your risk for downs and other abnormalities. that came up clean...if the dr. had found some kind of problem there, we might have reconsidered the amnio. imo, if you are someone who would not abort no matter what you found out, and if you have no other risk factors (genetic issues, problems with previous pregnancies, etc.), it doesn't make sense to do an amnio. however, if you would consider termination for chromosomal abnormalities, if you have other risk factors for disorders that could be found in an amnio, or if there are problems indicated in an ultrasound, then i would consider one. good luck with whatever you decide! anna ds 9-14-98 dd 2-8-02 __________________________________________________
