Well I guess the first question I would ask is ... if there was something found

on the amnio ie downs lets say .. would it affect you having the baby? if not ..

then I would not do it. I do not feel 37 is " old " to have a child .. if your

history and pg thus far are unremarkable then I wouldn't do it. However that

said Ive heard varying things on the pain .. some folks say its not that bad

others say it was horrible .. I think they take the best steps to avoid

discomfort .. for me the question would also be what are the risk itself of

performing an amnio. Make sure a specialist does it and not just the midwife.

Either way congratulations & good luck!

Amniocenthesis - Good or Bad?

My Nurse Midwife has told me that because of my age, we could have an

amniocenthesis. However, she said that she did not feel I was in any

danger but I am 37 and considered " high risk " even though I am very

healthy and do not have any history of Birth Defects in family. I am

looking for positive and negative feed back on this procedure. I

want to do what ever is best for me and my baby. Knowing the sex

would be a benefit, but not sure it is worth the pain or risk.

Thanks for any comments posted.

Well this is something that I don't want to give you my opinion on,

but I do want to tell you my experience. When I was pregnant with my

daughter, they wanted to enduce labor early, because she was so low

they could not even see her head on the ultrasound. They wanted to

have an amnio, because I am diabetic, and we were 2 1/2 weeks early.

With diabetics you have to be concerned about the baby arriving early

because thier lungs may not be developed. Anyway they did the amnio,

and I can honestly say this was the worst pain ever. Keep in mind on

a level of 1 to 10 with 10 being worst pain, my threshold is always

15+. I am not good with pain. I had an epidural at 2 1/2

centemeters. Anyway this caused me to start some type of labor,

which stopped, and I ended up having to be enduced anyway. If you do

have one, take it easy afterwards, and I think you'll be OK. It was

cool knowing her sex before she was born though. Keep me posted.

You want the good or bad in regards to an amnio but first, if the results of the

amnio identifies a birth defect will you terminate or continue with the

pregnancy? If your answer is yes, you will terminate, then I would go for the

amnio. If your answer is no, regardless of the results you would never

consider the thought of termination, then I would not go for an amnio.

This is a very gray area and is very much an individuals choice and beliefs. I

had an amnio because 1) I was 38 and 2) I had taken high doses of Vitamin A

prior to and early on in the pregnancy (over 50,000 IU). DH and I also made

the decision if in the event any birth detect was identified, we would

terminate. So you see, if you don't plan on that course of action, I

personally would not have the procedure.

The procedure alone was a piece of cake, I was afraid that it would hurt but it

was nothing really. As with any invasive procedure there are risks. Have a

specialist perform it and when scheduling, ask how many he/she has performed and

the % of miscarriages that have occurred as a result of the procedure.

Lynn,

I have had two seperate Amnio's one at about 17weeks and one at 36

weeks (with my last pregnancy)I experinced no pain whatsoever the

most painfull thing about it is a little pinch if you are afraid of

needles that would be anxiety not pain you would feel. Don't let the

pain be a factor in your decision making let it be whether or not the

genetic testing would matter. Just my opinion.

I had the Amnio at 17 weeks after the old (8yrs ago preggo #2 before

they did the tri-screen)AFP test came back abnormal. And acctually it

may have been closer to 18 or 19 weeks now that I think about it.

Lynn, I have 2 boys. With the first I did not have an amnio or any other

genetic testing I was 33. With the 2nd I had a CVS, because it was not supposed

to hurt, wrong! I bled for 2 days, very scary. My dr. said the dr. who did the

test had alot of experience with CVS and he did, but I don't think I will do

that again. I ended up having to have an amnio anyway later in the pregnancy,

because I had toxemia and they wanted to check the baby's lungs, I think I was 7

months pregnant at the time. I was terrified and thought it would hurt

something awful. It did not. Of course I did not look, and did not look at the

needle either. My husband said it was pretty big.

Initially we were not going to have the CVS or the amnio, at least that's what

we thought, cuz we thought even if there's something wrong, we will not abort.

But then we started thinking if there is something wrong, at least we can know

and prepare ourselves ahead of time, also the dr. will be aware of the problem.

And I'm pretty sure at the time, somewhere in the U.S. they had recently done in

utero surgery on a baby and put him back in and he was born just fine. But they

would not have known of the problem or have been able to save the baby without

the test. That's why we decided to have it done.

And we'll probably have it done again this time as well. I'm not looking

forward to the needle. I hope I don't feel it. I didn't last time, but I

really hate needles. I kept thinking maybe it didn't hurt cuz I was 7 months

and pretty big. But who knows? Just my 2 cents.

and prepare ourselves ahead of time, also the dr. will be aware of the problem.

Re: Amniocenthesis - Good or Bad?

> You want the good or bad in regards to an amnio but first, if the

results of the amnio identifies a birth defect will you terminate or

continue with the pregnancy? If your answer is yes, you will

terminate, then I would go for the amnio. If your answer is no,

regardless of the results you would never consider the thought of

termination, then I would not go for an amnio.

Just my opinion here, with my last daughter, the AFP screening test

showed a higher than normal risk for downs syndrome. I had to decide

whether to have the amnio or not. Termination was not an option for

me at all (I tried for 3 years to have her, with all the lovely

fertility treatments that you can imagine!) but I felt that if there

was a problem with my baby I wanted to know before hand so that I

could research the condition and prepare myself, my husband and my

older children for any problems she might have to face.

For me the actual amnio wasn't that bad, I guess it depends on the

technician doing the procedure. I did spend the day in bed afterwards

and had some mild cramping. It was worth it to me to put my mind at

ease. The baby was fine and she's now a healthy happy 4 years old.
