Guest guest
I tend to agree with Doc Bledsoe, I'd rather have the bad press go to the Ambulance Drivers and the better more planned by " us " press giving credit to " Medics " etc. As the man said " pick your battles " . Guest guest
As much as the story got my goat, I'm not going to take this road. Why would the EMS community want to claim these maggots? I watch this news show quite a bit, and they do usually refer to EMS folks as paramedics or emergency crews. Now, if I hear a story where EMS folks do something where they are not involved in a crime and they are referred to as " ambulance drivers " , you can bet your bippy I'll fire off a polite, professional correction. Guest guest
I never can stop laughing when I see e-mails like this... We are not " ambulance drivers " ...really...well I have driven plenty of them before...maybe we should start insisting that they call us ambulance engineers, or ambulance operators...pre-hospital provider vehicle operators... Why don't firefighters insist on being called pyrographic engineers? Do cops get upset when they are called cops? I hear this on a regular basis, and when it is said in my presence, I explain to people that we prefer to be called 'medics'...but I never stage a letter writing campaign...I agree with Doc B and others...if the term truly is deragatory, it couldn't have been used in a better manner than to describe these two...notice a paragraph down when they talked with Mr. Schriber they described him as an EMT. Relax, calm down, and go see some Christmas lights...a great way to forget about this non-important stuff and enjoy the season we find ourselves in... Guest guest
What we need to do is find out what needs to be done so that a bill can be started requiring TDSHS to start mandatory drug screens or require providers to do them and require them to report the results to TDSHS. This problem is an epidemic and I can think of more than a dozen medics or was that ambulance drivers who use cocaine or marijuana on a regular basis. These have been tested before and all that happens is they get fired from Company A and go to Company B. They usually do not report the problem because, " they have a family. " Okay, but they should have thought about that before they started using drugs. Some claim to use it because it keeps them on their feet when working OT. I know one guy who's been to rehab twice and was reemployed by the same company who fired him after he tested positive. And he is still using. So what do you think? Guest guest
As soon as Doctors, Nurses, Firefighters, and Police are affected by the same bill then I am all for it...BTW, I believe the agency that doesn't report this to DSHS when they fire an employee for a positive drug screen should be reported...I think it is a reporting requirement. Guest guest
Admission! I always wanted to drive an ambulance when I was a little girl. Thanks to my mother who told me stories about how womnen drove ambulances when men were away at WWII. We might as well start taking pride in the word, just like some people call each other 'n...' as a term of endearment. Guest guest
I think that you are at as much fault if you know it and are letting it happen without blowing the whistle on the guy. In a message dated 12/17/2005 2:31:02 P.M. Guest guest
Well.... I'm new to the group, and fairly new to the field as well so take this for what you deem it to be worth... I'm not exactly sure I wish for myself or any of my " esteemed colleagues " (peers or co-workers as you like) would desire any errant news media reporter to associate ANY of the likes of us in the same professional reference / vocational designation as THOSE two (alleged) misguided misfits. I say alleged misguided misfits because supposedly one is innocent in point of fact until adjudged and so proven guilty in a court of law....... But that's another email altogether. Here's my point. The " DUDMAN " is dead center on target about email campaigns and public education as to the proper title one should use in reference to our chosen profession. While I agree with the rest of us and Mr. Steve Berry and whole heartedly feel the pent up rage and overwhelming need to vehemently stamp and shout " I AM NOT A @*# & ^$^*^^ AMBULANCE DRIVER!!!!; one must choose one's battles. Having surveyed the field of battle before us, I personally feel this to be a poor one on which to mount either a defense or an attack. All of us can " re-educate " folks till were blue in the face about proper titles. Two key points come to mind however.... 1) Whining or exclaiming or filling someone's junk email box smacks of a childish insistence for everyone else to play along and pacify us by acknowledging what we want to be when we grow up. 2) You can teach a pig to sing, but in the end all you've done is waste your time and annoy the pig... And if by some miracle you should SUCCEED; well who really wants to listen to a pig singing? As we weed out (no pun intended) those of us among us who need not be one of us and as we " step it up " a few notches education wise and performance wise and develop better methods to prevent substandard characters from entering our ranks in the first place... Then we will ALL truly become the professionals we seek to be called, and thus will be. Many of us have been doing this for quite sometime, but we should never seek to sit on our laurels. To rest and become satisfied with our achievements is to step backward. ONWARD! UPWARD! FORWARD! -- Re: Here is a good one - Write a PROTEST I encourage each and every one of you to send a letter of protest to everyone at KABB for their unprofessional use of the term " Ambulance Driver " in this story. http://www.kabb.com/ They used the term Nurse (I guess they really are better that we are). I think I'll start calling news anchors " Teleprompter Readers " ..... Remember, professionalism in your letters................. be nice, but make a point, I did. Tater Danny Denson wrote: Do you ever wonder why we are not respected in the medical community? This article is from www.kabb.com, the Fox network in San . A pot bust in County this week that sounds like a scene from an old Cheech and Chong movie. Two ambulance drivers apparently on break and shopping at a Wal-Mart store in ville, south of San , wind up in handcuffs after an off-duty trooper detects the odor of marijuana. Apollo Ambulances are a familiar sight in County. They transport elderly patients, trauma patients and others to Connally Memorial Hospital in ville every day. So when an off-duty state trooper shopping at the Wal-Mart store thought he picked up the pungent odor of pot on a guy in uniform Monday evening, he recognized right away who the guy worked for, Apollo Ambulance Company. In fact, the ambulance was right outside in the parking lot. ny Deagen, County Sheriff's Office: " From there he got a consent to search the ambulance, discovered a marijuana pipe with marijuana and a bag of marijuana inside the ambulance. " Ambulance drivers Jessie and Mark , both of ville, had apparently just made a transport to the local hospital fifteen minutes before, and were apparently still on duty. Deagen: " The nurse there after the last run, she'd written down the ambulance driver's cell number on her hand that way she could call him and have him on runs for the night. So, it's our understanding that they were on duty for the rest of the night. " Both and spent the rest of night in jail however, charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. And though administrators at Connally were unavailable for comment, hospital business with Apollo, a private ambulance contractor, is now in jeopardy according to a hospital source. No one the slightest bit amused at the alleged hijinks of two regulars at the hospital ER. The news was no laughing matter to other EMTs in County. Schriber, Eagle Creek Volunteer Fire Department: " People's lives depend on the paramedics, especially for the proper drug calculations, the dosages and all that they have to figure out. And they have to be clear thinking at all times. Under the influence of drugs, alcohol or whatever, it can't happen. " Apollo refused to comment on the arrest, only to deny police reports that and are actually owners of the company. A hospital source says Apollo averages about fifteen transports of patients each day to Connally. Those runs are being re-assigned to other ambulance companies.
