I agree that this statement might refer more to a personal FM system. However,

it shows ignorance, nonetheless. Ask the audiologist if she has ever heard of

" incidental listening " . It is the method by which most of us learn language

when we are young. Our kids need access to any conversation which would be

heard, or overhead, by a hearing child or they are at a disadvantage and not

receiving an equal education. Actually, a speech pathologist should be able to

explain this very well and perhaps the teacher of this class should be asked to

do so. It sounds as if her credentials as an SLP are being used to avoid

providing other necessary services and technology. Any SLP who can work with 6

2-year-olds at once while keeping all their attention is worth more than anyone

could ever pay her!

I have to agree with 's comments on this. Plus, our audis said that a

sound filed system would cause more harm than good for our son for the same

reasons described. But since only the words " FM system " appeared in our

son's IEP after the meeting, (amazing, huh?) the school cobbled together a sound

field system our of old parts from the AV dept. and called it an " FM " system.

It was the disaster our audis had predicted.

Everything got louder including the paper shuffling and pushing of chairs.

Since the room was SO loud, no one made any attempts to bahve quietly. Books

were slammed shut, chair screeched across the floor -- our son was miserable

with

it. The other HOH boy in that class has a sensorinural loss, so it was even

worse for him because his aides amplified the noise in ways our sons' aides

didn't. (Ian's are analog, for a conductive loss) We fought its use, had it

removed and a correct system was purchased.

So, I'm against sound field systems in general. I do not see the point.

Individual FMs are so much more effective. And if there's a little planning, an

entire room of kids could be set to the same frequency to hear the teacher talk.

Then when it's being used one-on-one, everyone else flips their switches to

the " off " position.

which was a significant cost savings from the close to $5,000 many audies

were getting. I cruised around the net and finally found a reputable outfit

but the the school provided another one and we didn't have to buy it.

I think FM's run from $1500 - $2500 depending on what you need. Marissa's

Phonak Microlink FM for her hearing aids was about $2500 for both boots and

the trasmitter/mic.

In our area, both the Microlink and the Lexis are about $3200 complete. I also

checked web prices and found some for a few hundred cheaper, but if we bought

that way, we'd have to pay for each " fitting " appointment. Going through the

audi cost the same since we have up to 4 free appointments a year for checks and

adjustments--two of which have been necessary so far.

Curious how both manufacturers have to charge exactly the same, isn't it? Gee,

you'd think there's some price-fixing going on. Hmmm....

want something cordless. I haven't found how much they are because our audi

doesn't distribute them. I called an office that did but they never returned my

phone call. Anyway I hope that helps. We have thought about approaching our

church to do a fund raiser for him, because we feel it is that important. We'll

see. Sometimes insurance will cover it and that's what we are waiting for, but

it looks like there are some serious loop holes and we are in one.
