I had a TT in 1998. They cut of the blood supply to my parathyroid and now I

have to take 2400mg of calcium and Rocaltrol. I had RAI treatment in 1998. also

have had 2 clean body scans (1999 and 2000). I am off my meds now to have the

3rd scan in about 3 weeks.

Remember, YMMV. Some of us have severe cases of hypoparathyroidism with

fluctuating calcium levels. Before Rocaltrol (calcitriol) life was crude

with HPTH. Calitriol makes life much easier and keeps (most of) us out of

the hospital, but management is still not easy sometimes.

<<One day after my RAI treatment I went to ER again. At that time they

increase my calcium to 4000 mg and the calcitrol too.>>

That is a LOT of calcium. Have you had you PTH (ParaThyroid Hormone) level

checked? If you are diagnosed permanently hypopara, the preferred method

of treatment is to take more calcitriol and less calcium. You may wish to

ask your doctor about this.

<<If you are worry for opsteoporosis later I can send you a report that

show that patients without parathy did very well just with the calcium>

supplement.>>

We aren't usually at risk for osteoprosis because we don't have bone

turnover like a person with circulating PTH.

<<Even they didn't have kidneystones again (this was tehe reason to remove

my parathy).>>

If you had hypErparathyroidism B4 your surgery - yes, your chances of

kidney stones lessens. Depending on the condition of your bones prior to

surgery, you may or may not be at risk for osteoporosis. Those of us who

did not have hypErpara B4 surgery and have had HPTH long-term do develop

kidney stones if not properly managed. I would suspect that the same thing

could happen to someone who is now hypopara (over time) if they aren't

properly managed.

I hope this isn't too confusing. HPTH is a complicated illness.
