Donna, have you gone to " Etsy " and looked at what folks charge for

paintings there? Might be a good place to start... $20 seems kind of " low "

to me...

Sharon's portrait

Sharon, first of all I want to thank you for letting me use your photo as

reference for my watercolor painting. I hope you don't mind that I've shown

it to friends. Also, today, I took it to Central WA Disability Resources and

showed it to Ann. She liked it so much, she wants me to do one of her

for her dad. She offered to pay me $20 and I said okay.

I really need to learn how to market my stuff.

Thanks again.

, this is the first time anybody has ever offered to pay for a painting,

and a portrait, too. I don't really consider myself to be a portrait artist.

In fact, I still consider myself to be a beginner. There is so much I have to

learn and understand about watercolor painting. Right now, I just think it's

exciting to even be offered any amount of money. As my skill and confidence in

my ability improves, and I learn more about marketing, I would probably charge

more.

Thanks for your input. I haven't looked at etsy, ebay, or any other place.

But, every now and then, I stop in at one of the galleries in town and see the

outrageous prices on what I would consider " framed junk " and I think that my son

who has autism can do better than this.

That's great that you are "commissioned" to do a portrait! Wow!! Congrats, Donna:) SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws or defects. And it's fabulous to be asked! Yay!!!!

I " hang out " amongst many folks who " do " a wide variety of things -

costuming, jewelry, needlework, etc etc etc, but you're my first " bud " who

does portraits!

General rule of thumb amongst us fiber folks is to charge

Cost of materials

+

time/labor

Only folks who don't want repeat business or have an over-inflated ego

charge those " gallery " prices, that's for sure! ;-) So sometimes it's a

good idea to charge a little less that you think you MIGHT be able to get,

so you get more orders.

That's my thoughts on it, anyway - other folks' mileage may vary...
