Brother Mike just gave me a flashback to ninteen years ago that I

thought I would share with you all.

Early afternoon, Christmas 1986. Shooting at a tidy and quiet

minority neighbourhood home. Twenty-something female meets us at the

front door with " He's in here, " and calmly leads us into the living

room. There on the couch, in front of the television, is our victim.

He is sitting upright on the couch and looks perfectly conscious

except that his head is drooping down with his chin on his chest.

His eyes are open, but he is motionless and unresponsive. I get

closer and see a tiny hole in the very center of his forehead with a

thin trickle of blood running down his nose, then dripping off into

his lap. There is nobody else in the house, and the woman who met us

is standing quietly with her arms crossed watching the scene unfold.

I asked the woman, " do you know what he was shot with? " She

replied, " yes, " but then said nothing else. I turned to ask her

again, and she was gone. I went back to working the patient while my

partner returned to the truck to grab the cot. About the time he

returned, the woman walked back into the room and said, " here ya

go. " I turned to see her standing there holding out a .22 rifle. I

quickly asked her to please set the weapon down, which she did, then

my curiosity got the best of me. I asked her, " Uhhh... do you by

chance know who shot him? " The woman nonchalantly replied, " Yeah, it

was me. "

We quickly loaded and ran with the patient to the trauma center,

about fifteen minutes away, where of course he died. There about an

hour later, we talked to cops who had made the scene after we left.

The man was the woman's boyfriend. He had come over to her house

(actually her parents' house) for Christmas with no gift, plopped

his ass down on the couch, and proceeded to watch television and not

give her any attention. The woman gave him a wrapped Christmas gift.

When he opened it up and saw the bottle of cologne inside, instead

of saying " thank you " he said, " Baby, why you give me this

bullshit? " That's when the woman went into her father's closet,

picked up the .22, walked back into the living room and shot her

boyfriend square between the eyes.
