Guest guest
Charmaine- I, myself, got pregnant 4 months post-op and had a miscarriage. There are a few other people I know of that had the same experience. I guess it all depends on you and the amount of weight you have to lose, too....if at 3 months post-op you're near your goal weight, it would be better for you than for someone that had another 100 lbs. to lose. I lost 120 lbs in 14 months....but, after that 4th month, I was only down about 50 or so....so, I still had a bunch to lose. My body just wasn't ready for pregnancy. All I can tell you, is why take the chance of being heartbroken on purpose? Cause that is what it was to me....heartwrenching...and I miscarried on September 10th...the day before the tragedy....and had a DNC on September 12th, the day after. Needless to say, I had a really, really bad week. But, follow the directions of your doctors and save yourself that pain (emotional and physical). I got pregnant TOTALLY by accident and have been EXTREMELY careful since. And, although I'm 14 months post-op now, I still want to wait, because I have another 20 lbs. to lose. =) Tara > I know this may seem naive, but why not get pregnant? Guest guest
Charmaine - I got pregnant 4 mos post op. Trust me it was quite unintentional. Even though the baby and I are doing fine so far here are the reasons I wish I would have waited. More adequate nutrition for myself and the baby. I have lost weight the entire pregnancy and to be very honest if my doc hadn't been monitoring the baby so closely via ultrasound I would be panicking. A more assured feeling that my body was back to normal and I could get through this with minimal problems. I have been nervous and scared for the majority of this pregnancy. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It was even worse when I would read of someone going through a heartbreak during their pregnancy and I would stop and wonder, would my baby be okay or would we have problems. My hubby and my doc have been great dealing with my nervous nellie paranoid self! I am really trying to make the best nutrition choices for myself and the baby but with such limited intake it is very hard. I have been supplementing lately with protein shakes and ughhhhhh that is getting very old. There are reasons that the docs tell us to wait 1-2 years before trying and it's not all about maximizing the weight loss. If you can wait, I suggest to do it for your own peace of mind knowing that you did everything right for you and your baby. Hope this helps and good luck. Guest guest
I also miscarried at 4 months post Op and honestly there is no gaurantee that the miscarrage was because of WLS but there's also no gaurantee that it wasn't. I honestly think you need to think a little less about what you want and think about what the baby will need that your body can't give it right now. I did not wait long enough and that was very irresponsible and quite selfish of me. I got pregnant by accident then miscarried and did nothing to prevent the second one partially because I was blinded by the loss and wanted so badly to have that first pregnancy back. Now that I am 6 months pregnant and 1 year post op I wish I would have waited for the baby's sake. Well thats just my experience and everybody is different but it is something you don't want to rush into. Take a while to think about it. Guest guest
Charmaine Why go through a life saving surgery that DECREASES nutritional intake for 12-24 mos, to turn around and deliberately risk messing up the results by getting pregnant, which requires INCREASING nutritional intake in order to keep the baby and you alive or healthy enough? Why risk the life of a child you want so much? Some women have gotten pregnant by ACCIDENT and it turned out OK. Some have miscarried. But if you wait a few measly months, at least to 1 year post, and you reach goal AND get pregnant successfully and safely, you will have acheived ALL of your results. However, if the Doc told you something like, " you need to get pregnant asap or you will have to have a hysterectomy " because of Endometriosis or something, then I would say risk it if you are afraid of waiting for not being able to at all. But if you are reasonably healthy and fertile, you WILL be able to have all the babies you want, whether its now or in a year, so please give you and baby the best odds possible. If you go against this advice and fail at a successful or healthy pregnancy you will blame yourself, If you succeed, then WONDERFUL. If you succeed at a healthy child and yet stop losing weight, then you have undid all that WLS was supposed to do for you. If you continue to lose, then WONDERFUL also. Go with your head on this one vs. your heart. I pined for a baby since trying with my first husband in 93 and felt I would never have one - had I jumped the gun and tried before I had what I really wanted or needed in my life, I would have been sorry. Then I had WLS in Aug 1999 and waited until Dec 2001 to try to conceive. I conceived on 12/22/02 and the unbelievable has happened and I am finally pregnant. It is worth waiting for. My weight was maintained and normal for over a year, my finances were recovered and strong, my husband and I had remarried in Oct 01, and the time felt right. If something goes wrong, at least I won't be able to blame myself or feel like I did anything that could have caused it. Again, JMO Shirley
