I'm like tilly, and if I reach that point, I can't tell you I'm hungry. I try to check in with my "would I eat an apple" ( which I like a lot, but it isnt a food I tend to crave.) if I would, then I know I'm hungry and I check out what I really want. Otherwise, I skip it. And yes, sometimes what I really want is an apple! Especially now that they are in season!Patti

I've been waiting.....

.....though you should become aware of what your own hunger scale feels like. For me, at some point I get really cranky and am unable to make decisions, and the only thing to do is to eat, but I may or may not have passed through a "feeling hungry" stage before I got there....

It's been so many years since I did any IE, that I can't remember whether I should go ahead and eat a little something to jump start my system, or just wait for the feeling of hunger.

It's interesting to hear the questions people ask themselves to determine hunger signals. We're actually learning about ourselves and how much food our bodies really need and want, which is so great. I also ask "am I hungry?" and I usually pass on food if I get a wishy-washy "well, sort-of" answer. I know to eat if I get a solid (though hopefully not starving or desperate) "yes." If I get a "I don't know," I will wait 15 minutes or so and ask again.

It's funny that I can recognize mouth hunger now. I tell myself that the food will be so much more pleasurable and so much better tasting if I can wait until I feel stomach hunger. That usually works, but I try not to get too punitive about it. I figure I will still need to eat from mouth hunger from time to time.

I am still not good at recognizing hunger. Last night my stomach was growling and I thought maybe I had eaten something bad until I asked the apple question. I am also rotten at recognizing pain but I'm getting better. If I can't wait to try something delicious until I'm hungry or the true opportunity will pass, I will take a bite or two. Now that I'm not depriving, that is generally sufficient. Patti

Incigul,

It's funny that I can recognize mouth hunger now. I tell myself that the food will be so much more pleasurable and so much better tasting if I can wait until I feel stomach hunger. That usually works, but I try not to get too punitive about it. I figure I will still need to eat from mouth hunger from time to time.

This is GREAT.I am going to try this on those occasions i am tempted to eat before i'm hungry. not too often these days, but they do still happen.

best,abby

I know that 'cranky and unable to make decisions' feeling - for me its when my blood sugar has dropped BELOW what it needs to be and I get light headed and unable to keep focused. Yep - by this time I have well gone 'past' hunger that I ought to have felt but hadn't - probably due to old suppression habits. Re acquainting with the sensations of my own hunger has been and continues to be a challenge for me. I'm better at that now, but certainly not 100%, especially when I get immersed in an activity.

Keep up the good work - it can and will improve :-)
