Nails that are very bendable could be a sign of rheumatoid arthritis.

Nails that crack, peel and chip easily mean you need more protein and

minerals in your diet.

Brittle, soft nails with a shine and no moon may indicate an

overactive thyroid. Nails that are like a bumpy road can indicate a

thyroid disorder too.

This is my nails..although I am asuming mine are bendable because they

are soft from growing so fast. I only have the moon shape left on my

thumbs.

My word! I used to have moons. Now only on my thumbs, but on my

thumbs are purple arcs above the moons. I have receding moons. One

thumb nail has lines that make in a bumpy ride.

you know, i never even noticed until i read this- i dont have moons

either. i have a couple of nails with a hint of a spot of a moon

left, rest have none. wow lol. i have good nails, long, grow with no

troubles, but i do have ridges too. also have 2 that started growing

downward, like they want to curl. if you guys have that too, they

sell nail straightener at beauty supply store, you can use it as a

base coat and it helps. also, does anyone have a hard time with

their cuticles? as good as my nais may be, my cuticles are just

nasty. they just grow and grow, and get thick, you know? its

embarassing to get a manicure as it takes like 20 minutes to get it

all out of there :(

any ideas on the cuticles? tried lotions and oils, and cutting

exposure to really hot water, doesnt help. it is totally thyroid

related.

My nails have never had moons, except for my thumbs,

and my nails on my index fingers curve downward when

they get a little bit of length on them. My pinky

nails have a twisty bend when they start getting long.

Hi betty, my nails are bizarre! the right thumb has a normal looking moon, the left has one but is barely noticeable and is deformed looking, instead of a curve shape its like jagged looking-and my left thumbnail is the worst as far as the bumps and ridges.my two middle fingers have very tiny moons, and the rest-none visible at all. all my nails have vertical ridges and bumps, with the left ring finger the worst with a dark red vertical line from top to bottom. i used to have nice nails that i could keep long, now i have to keep them cut very short b/c they crack and split so bad. oh, and my two pointer fingernails will grow up and away from the bed and then the middle part will grow down with the edges remaining lifted up. its actually painful if they get long enough. its weird! nitaKathy Kitzcat wrote: --- betty_flager wrote:> I believe this. Yours sound like mine accept for the pinky finger. Only have moons on thumbs. With Graves disease, my pinky fingernails were lifting from the skin. They are now normal. I read somewhere that when the fingernails grow downward it has something to do with the heart and circulatory. Well, thyroid controls every part of the body. Oh wow I have no cuticles at all ever and I never have to push them back or trim them they just aren't there..... guess that is a good thing for me. Tinalecody wrote: Hi Angie... I have the same nail problems as you... never

connected it to thyroid of course...I was very recently dx'd with Hashimoto's and looking back over the years of cycling I know I have had it for at least 3 decades. Unfortunetly for us ladies... doc's prefer to think we are just emotional hypochondriacs. I have been tested for all sorts of autoimmune diseases over the years but no one ever tested for Hashimoto's. In my Medical Ency. its not even mentioned in the auto-immune disorders section. But right now I have so many other medical issues to deal with some dx'd, some not that are NOT related to thyroid. Right now I am on 100mcg of thyroid and I have noticed quite a bit of improvement.
