Does anyone know how many clean scans you need to have before trying to get

pregnant? Also how long after RAI do you need to wait? I had 152 mci in

3/01 and have had 2 clean scans since. Does the small 5 mci scan dose mean

you need to wait 6 months? Thank you for your info.

My nuclear medicine doctor told me to wait 12 months after the RAI to

try getting pregnant. He also said that he had patients that became

pregnant much sooner and had healthy babies. However, it is safer to

wait and avoid any risks. My OBGYN wants to test my blood to make

sure that the hormones are stabalized before trying. I would

reccomend speaking with your OB. It is my understanding that the

scans are not enough radiation to be concerned with pregnancy issues.

In my case, I have just had my first clean scan (on 12/26/02, a year after

RAI) and I've been told to wait until February to start trying to

conceive-no need to wait the six months after the scan dose, but wait at

least one full menstrual cycle. One thing to consider is that while you are

trying to get pregnant, during the pregnancy, and during breastfeeding you

will not want to have another scan. Since you've had 2 clean scans, I can't

imagine it would be a problem to go a couple years without another one. Hope

that helps. Ali

Just a reminder that there's more than just the RAI exposure involved. If you

have been hypo for a scan, it is critical to return to a suppressed (or at least

normal) TSH before conceiving.
