Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Sweden, but we have seen it in the movies of course... ; ) I never remember when it is, except I know it's kind of close to Christmas (you learn SOME things from going to the movies you know...). But since you ask now I am guessing it's this upcoming weekend, no? I will have a lot of reading and writing to do (I was unwell last week, so I am a little bit behind), so probably not much of festivities this weekend. BUT the coming Sunday is the first Advent Sunday, and as such marks the start of the Christmas season here. So we'll definitely be having glögg and gingerbread cookies. And maybe even saffron buns. And, of course, we will be putting up our Advent candles, and our electrical advent lights. Electrical advent lights usually looks something like this: http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fil:Elektrisk_adventsljusstake.JPG And we have them on the window sills, looks great from outside. The candles look something like this (there is four of them in the holder, and the first Sunday of advent you light one of them, the second you light two etc.):http://www.brunnvalla.ch/d/images/adventslicht.jpgIn fact, the advent lights are VERY Swedish somehow. Jonas Gardell – who is one of Sweden's multi-talented artists (he has written novels, done stand-up comedy, acted in movies, written plays and movies, done TV, written songs, etc. you get it, you can't really say "the author" or "the actor" etc. – wrote a song titled "Detta är Sverige" (i.e. "This is Sweden"), where he uses the phrase: "Adventsljusstakarnas land" ("the country of advent lights"), and it have sort of stuck... Unfortunately I can't find the song on youtube, but it probably wouldn't be possible to translate anyway, he has a way with words...love/Reb>> Hi hope it is ok with Sharon,n and nne to ask this:I was wondering what everyone's Thanksgiving plans are, or, if in fact, you even celebrate Thanksgiving. I'm not sure I know what happens in South Africa, Sweden or Turkey! I'm planning on being with my family-5 kids and my hub, and going down to PA to share the day with 4 of my 5 sibs and my dad who is in assisted living. The only drawback is, we are going out to eat. It does save on preparation and clean up, but will cost each of us $35 per person! Most family members just have 2 in their group, so we will be hard-pressed as we are 7. Add to that the hotel we are staying in, which will be an additional $200 (for 2 rooms), and it is a heap of $. It will however be fun to be with family. Last year I was in a psych unit while my family celebrated the same way as is planned for this year. What is everyone else doing? love and hugs to all, Kate>

My neighbor has invited me to come, I will be bringing the Yorkshire pudding. Mike might be arriving back to the States that day, too. Not sure from the message that his co-worker sent is it is next Thurs or the following Thurs, I *think* he meant next Thurs... ~*~Hugs~*~ ~*~Akiba~*~ -- OT-Thanksgiving plans Hi hope it is ok with Sharon,n and nne to ask this:I was wondering what everyone's Thanksgiving plans are, or, if in fact, you even celebrate Thanksgiving. Here is the recipe and a link to what it SHOULD look like: Yorkshire pudding is NOT a sweet pudding, it is more like a bread. Yorkshire Pudding Per person: 1/2 C liquid 1/2 C flour 1 egg. The liquid is 1/2 milk (I use whole) and 1/2 water. Mix the ing, adding a pinch of salt. Example, you are making it for 3 people, you'd use 3/4 C milk, 3/4 C water, 1-1/2 C Flour & 3 eggs. Set the mix in the fridge to chill. Meanwhile, roast something. Anything. Tradition is a roast, but I have made it with roast chicken and it is awesome. When the roast comes out of the oven, turn the oven heat up to 450*. In a large ovenproof vessel (I use a cast-iron skillet with high sides) put some fat from the roast (if there is any) and/or some bacon fat. You probably could use something like Crisco, I wouldn't use oil. Bacon fat is really good. Put it in the oven, get it really hot. When it is hot, take it out of the oven and (having whisked again to re-integrate anything that separated)pour the batter into the vessel. Bake for 15 mins till risen, turn oven down to 350* and continue baking till brown. Meantime make your gravy (see, I use bacon fat for the pudding and the drippings from the roast for the gravy). When it is risen and browned, about 1/2 hour total time, remove, pop out of vessel, cut and serve drizzled with the gravy. This is what it should look like: (and No, this isn't from a magazine or the net, this is from my blog and is a pic of one I made) http://yodamamma.blogspot.com/2005/06/my-yorkshire-pudding-right-out-of-oven.html ~*~Hugs~*~ ~*~Akiba~*~ -- Re: OT-Thanksgiving plans What is IN Yorkshire pudding?

This is what it should look like: (and No, this isn't from a magazine or the net, this is from my blog and is a pic of one I made)

We have an unusual dinner. Some is traditional some is not traditional at all. We have turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, cranberry sauce, and a veggie. This yr is corn and probably applesauce. The non traditional part is dumplings, not like the Bisquick, they are called bread dumplings and then sauerkraut. Not straight from the can. It has some other ingredients. My inlaws were Czech and this is what they had. Not sure on dessert yet. I know pumpkin pie, brownies and cherry cheese cake but not sure if or what else there will be.

This year my daughter, Challis, and her family will be here for Thanksgiving. There will be 13 of us--five adults and my 8 grandkids. Enjoy your time together, Kate. It will be expensive for you but remember you won't all be together forever. love you SharonThis email is a natural hand made product.
