Bonni,

What specifically would you like to know about the trach? My dauther

Carmen has had hers since 3 weeks old, she came home from the hospital

4 days later--it took her about a month to heal well and to have a

formed " stoma " . She was on milk products and up until about 9 months

ago had a lot of suctioning. We suctioned about every 5 to 10 minutes

or more during the day. At night, she hardly needed suctioning, and

we felt very lucky for that. Once we took her off milk products her

suctioning decrreased significantly--not we only suction about once

per hour or less. It is an amazing difference. Until the trach site

heals up, there will be a lot of secretions as our body will try to

get rid of the foriegn object that is in our trachea. Carmen also

vomited once in a while when we suctioned if we went down a little too

far because it made her gag (which neurologically is a good thing), so

I would suggest that Cherise is only suctioned to the end of the trach

tube and no longer. The other thing that helped Carmen is the use of

" trach pants " or drain sponges under her trach. This caught a lot of

secretions and kept her neck dry. We would change these throughout

the day, and we were always complimented by Carmen's docs as to how

clean, dry and well kept her trach area was. We used acetic acid to

keep the trach area clean--which is distilled water and vinegar (about

3/4 water and 1/4 vinegar solution. I also bought several stackable

bins for Carmen's room to store her supplies. Carmen was not on

oxygen but is on a warm mist of humidified air at night.

It is such a roller coaster those early months. Remind me if she already

has a trach or if they are still in the process of avoiding one.

She has a trach and mommy is finding that very difficult,still learning to

clean it etc...I'ts very hard on her at this stage.Any advise would help.

Greetings from Ireland,

My advice would be to try and find a Speech & Language Therapist to

follow it up.

They'll be, along with the ENT doctors, the best to help Little

Cherise after her op.
