Guest guest
I'm not sure that this is really brag-worthy, but it makes me feel proud of our son and amazed at how much things have changed from when we started this journey. Ian (13) has been chosen to participate in a mentoring program with IBM. The company has a variety of mentoring programs and this particular one has been started to pair young people (most of them are HOH/deaf) with similarly disabled adults working at IBM. Ian's mentor is a deaf man working at one of the local IBM facilities. He is one of a handful of middle and high school kids chosen for the program and he is very excited. My husband attended the orientation with our son. They met Ian's mentor and toured the facility. The mentor and mentie (as we're calling Ian) will go through the program mostly via the internet. I don't know the details yet, my husband is the one who with all the info. From what I understand Ian has several things in common with his mentor, including losing his hearing gradually and after he'd learned to speak. The gentleman chose to be implanted (rather recently) -- something Ian may be contemplating once he's a young adult. I'd been despairing of the lack of HOH/deaf adult role-models in my son's day-to-day life and now this program has begun. In my opinion, the program is off to a marvelous start! -- Jill
Guest guest
How exciting! Anyone know of any other companies doing that?
