Guest guest
Hi Corrie, When is Tate due? We are expecting a baby the end of June......Did you have a level 2 sonogram? With my second child they told us more good chance he would be born with Downs and we had had a fetal echo and they saw a problem with his heart. They wanted us to go for prenatal counseling. We opted not to and had a worrisome 4 months left of pregnancy but my son was born perfectly healthy. How many weeks are you? Guest guest
Corrie- Gosh, I remember you from a conference and the list. I can't believe you're in this situation. What a complex bunch of things you must be feeling! I hope you are able to get as much as info as possible to help you prepare -- but how can you prepare for such news? I noticed that this lil' guy has a name. It sure helped us that Aubrie was named and had a full identity in our family before her arrival. I imagine that you are all feeling quite bonded to lil' Tate already and that you'll be ready to face whatever challenges he may bring with him. I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers hoping that Tate's arrival with be filled with joy and blessings. Guest guest
Tia, I am 18 almost 19 weeks and was just 18 when they did the US. It was Level 2 with a perinatologist. Your story is encouraging when so many of us have the opposite histories. We'll see what happens tomorrow. Why did they suspect Downs in your second baby? Tate is due Aug.22. Guest guest
Thanks . We are glad to have time to prepare. I always have said if I found out about all of Peyton's problems at once I'd probably been comatose. As it turned out we found out some at 5mos. pregnancy, a little more at birth then the rest at 2 mos. However, that experience has taught us that we most likely have a long road ahead of us!! A road with many questions and some we may not like the anwers to. So we're remaining cautiously optomistic, which is hard. Hope to be able to see you in St Louis at the conference. Peyton's school district is dragging their feet(not his team-they're wonderful- the board office). But I'm confident they'll get to come(I'll make sure of it:)). Oppotunities like this don't come around very often for them!! Thanks again for the prayers. We know from experience, it's the only thing sustaining us now!! Guest guest
Corrie- I do hope your team comes to the conference. I expect it to be a wonderful experience -- 3 days with Meg and at our fingertips!! My part will be to add a " case study " to the CHARGE overview to help us bring some reality to the picture and to help teams begin to understand the reality of their own student. I didn't realize you had some warning about Peyton's issues before birth. Aubrie's were all a big shock. I guess there are pros and cons to having warning. My mother-in-law and I were just talking about something similar. My brother-in-law who is my age (42) is expecting his first child. When my mil was our age, my husband and I were married! There are pros and cons to having children earlier or having them younger -- just as there are pros and cons to knowing things in advance or not knowing. We decided it's best to embrace the pros of your situation because you can't change the cons. Guest guest
Corrie, I think they suspected Downs because of the heart defect. Now they can check the fat on the fetus' neck at I believe 14 weeks. My son was born 15 years ago so technology wasn't that great. You are about 6-7 weeks behind me. My actual due date is July 11 but since I have to have a c-section, she wants to do it around 38 weeks. Are you having another sono today? Good luck and let me know how things go. Guest guest
Corrie, I'm surprised that the odds of Tate having CHARGE is as high as 50%. I thought that a person with CHARGE has a 50/50 chance of passing CHARGE to his children. And that if the parents of a child with CHARGE had another child the odds of that child having CHARGE would be less than 5%. Am I wrong? Or are the odds higher because of the things that have been identified by ultrasound. Our son Cameron (who has CHARGE) was diagnosed in utero with bilateral cleft lip/palate. The possibility of him having CHARGE was never discussed as a possibility during our pregnancy. And we even had a prenatal visit at our local Children's hospital with the cranial facial team to discuss the cleft. BTW, our oldest child is typical. Please keep us posted about the ultrasound. Your family will be in my prayers. Mom to Cameron 4 (CHARGE) and 5 3/
Guest guest
, The number of 1-2% for parents having another child with CHARGE changed for us when we had the ultrasound and Tet of Fallot, cleft lip and a kidney problem all found(by the way, Tet of Fallot was confirmed today by fetal echo). After having all that info. available, Meg kind of gave us her unofficial number of a 50/50 chance of Tate's problems being due to CHARGE and the other 50 being another syndrome or just a couple of things on their own(that's why I was e-mailing the list to see if anyone else had children who had just one or two things that are wrong-not another syndrome). Normally your knowledge of the recurrence risk is correct but we are not normal with this pregnancy. Guest guest
, That's very true. Meg and I were just talking about this today and we made up the analogy of a scavenger hunt versus a big surprise. I said I'd rather have this scavenger hunt than the surprise because that's all I know. It's what I had with Peyton and now Tate. Maybe if I had the " surprise " I would think, " gosh, I'm glad I'm just now finding out and I didn't have to worry about this for the last 5 months " !! Hope I don't have to test this theory out anymore. I'd like this to be the last scavenger hunt for a long while. Guest guest
Maby this will put you a little bit at ease, my one brother at one of the ultrasounds was found to have a clef and tetra of the falot thing. He was born medicaly unremarkable. Im sending positive thoughts for the same thing (medicaly unremarkable) Hugs anyways no matter what happens he will be a loving child and he will touch every member of your family no matter what the outcome.
