Hi Izumi

I am 31 and have exactly the same reservations for the same reasons,

if it goes wrong it's possibly immediate THR and I feel I'm at least

ten years too young for that..

I didn't trust my own judgement either so I bought a pedometer and

measured my steps and kms walked every day for six weeks. I noted

descriptions of pain, medication taken, and I tried to answer the

following question everyday too..If my hip felt like this every other

day would I operate? On bad days the answer was always yes and on the

good days I had difficulty remembering the pain! At the end of the

six weeks I found myself with undeniable proof that I am prepared to

get my hip resurfed.

I have been advised not to wait too long but not by a doctor. I have

seen several and consulted with several and none of them told me I

should be in any hurry and most ask me if I couldn't wait a little

longer. I too have consulted with Dr DeSmet and he told me it is

possible to resurface my hip but he also questioned the level of

urgency.

I know it is inevitable, and I have decided to do it, but I feel I

have enough time to make sure it fits into all the other things going

on in my life at the moment. In a way I am deferring for a year or

so..unless my hip drives me absolutely crazy in the meantime.

The only advice I can offer you is to take notes when you feel your

pain. Document it if you don't trust your own judgement. Also bear in

mind that many people are faced with BHR for different reasons, some

requiring more urgency than others. You don't mention who advised you

not to wait and I think that such advice, in order to be followed,

should come from a professional.

Take care,

Casey

Hello Izumi,

I have to agree with Casey in that the only opinion you should trust

regarding your own case is that of your physian. You can listen to other

people's stories, but remember that is all they are. Stories. Yours may be

(and probably is) different from anyone elses.

I just received a THR though at first I would have preferred a Resurface

device. In my own particular case I had an agressive, rapidly advancing case

of AVN and the difference between the possibility of a resurf and a THR was

only a matter of about 4 months. In the case of OA the critical time frame

may be a number of years.

It may make sense (in the case of AVN) to track the degree and rapidity of

degradation in just a few months with x-rays. If there is a lot of change

more serious consideration to getting it checked again sooner would be a

good course of action. If you see no change in a few months, you have a lot

longer time to consider options.

In my case I put off the final decision as long as I could, but it was

unfortunately just a little too long and it was only a few months. You may

have a few years. Just keep an eye on it.
