Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to post a big thank-you to all of you for your

information about the ABR! I always learn so much from this list and

have appreciated your input. Our weather here in CA has been awful and

it was difficult for me to get online this past week for any length of

time.

I discussed my question with our therapist who works in deaf ed, and

her feeling was that the ABR they did for our daughter was really very

accurate in terms of the levels they tested etc...The ranges tested

are those that represent the ability to develop normal speech and she

tested fine in all those areas. She will have another audiogram done

shortly and it will be really interesting to see how she does. I

really dont think hearing is probably our issue at this point, but

just want to make sure it's addressed if there is a problem.

A big thank you to whomever mentioned Hyperlexia (I apologize for not

having your name)..I had read about Hyperlexia as I had long thought

about processing probs like CAPD where Ellie is concerned..and at that

time ran into Hyperlexia info. We actually had a therapy eval

yesterday - yes, on Sunday - which was great..He had been flooded out

earlier in the week and couldnt get here. So his impression of our

daughter is more in line with something kind of similar to Hyperlexia

- it's called Semantic Pragmatic disorder...it does fall in the

Autistic spectrum of things...We'll be seeing a developmental peds

shortly and hopefully with some good documentation will get her into

the County's special pre-school...Anyway, wanted to thank you all

again for all your great help and I'll post again after the next

audiogram if need be..Take care everyone.

My son was never officially diagnosed as Hyperlexic but he had all of the

symptoms and autistic like tendencies when he was younger. He was reading

anything he saw (cursive, lower case, upper case) before he was two. We had

to actually use this reading skill to teach him all of his social skills.

We also had to transfer his ability to read anything to the ability to

understand what he was reading. Then, how to draw inferences and understand

the social implications of what he was reading. A long process with LOTS of

speech therapy...7 times a week for approximately 10 years. He is now a

charming (except for the 1 percent of the time Dr. Hyde appears), 13 year

old with completely appropriate social skills, off the charts

intellectually, and with phenomenal english language skills who is

mainstreamed in 7th grade in all GT classes. He wants to be a lawyer or a

writer if he can't get a job testing video games for a living. He is

studying Japanese at Towson University in the evening instead of learning

Spanish or French in middle school because he says he can hear it better

with the little residual hearing he has. I attend with him and last

semester, he and I both got A's. Quite an accomplishment for a deaf kid who

was 12 when he started the class.

So, use whatever tools you can to help your child and never give up!

Wow !

What a great inspiration...thanks for sharing. I'm hopeful that our

daughter will have some early reading skills (dont think she has any

now) as this may make it easier to help her understand things. As for

now, I sometimes feel like I'm floundering helplessly and safety

issues are really creeping up...But we'll figure it out somehow :)

did you say speech 7 days per week?? And I thought 2x weekly was a

lot!! Loved also what you said about the Japanese language. My

children are Korean-American and I'd like for them to attend the

Korean school when they turn 5. I know my son will enjoy it, but have

of late, wondered if this will be a possibility for Ellie...So again,

thanks for the inspiration....So appreciate it. Take care
