Are you taking any meds for UC? Any supplements? Acidophilus or

yogurt? Were you using any of this and stopped preSCD or during the

first three months?

My son is on SCD for UC and we went through the 3 month flare. It took a while

to get it under control, but here's what we did...

1st we tried GSE (grapefruit seed extract but triple recommended dose - under

advise of alternative practitioner) for 10 days, then I got rid of ALL illegals

(his meds were not legal) and his GI doctor doubled his sulfasalazine (he was

taking 1000mg a day, now 2000mg a day) and I switched probiotics. He is now

having solid bm's and only 1 a day - if he skips a day, he might have 2 the next

day. We did the intro several times during that period of flaring but it didn't

help - we did not have to go on the intro to get him symptom free. He's still

got a tinge of blood in stools, but he is improving daily, no blood or mucous

and they are formed. You have to get the inflammation under control - that is

the key. The GSE will help kill off the stubborn bacteria that are hanging on

for dear life.

Really we have been there I know what you are going through. Don't give up on

SCD - we did for a brief while (not chaging diet but trying illegal supplements

and such) and I regretted it. You will get through this! Also, don't be afraid

to go back to the GI doc for help - I was afraid he'd put us back on prednisone,

but he didn't and the meds helped get this under control for us. Best wishes

for you!

Robbie

thanks for responding! what have i been eating? nothing

new...muffins, carrots, bit of peanut butter, tons of cheese, meats,

yoghurt, green beans, homemade jello... i did start drinking chamomil

tea because the baby i'm nursing was gassy but it had never bothered

me before.

no gassy veggies like broccoli... in BTVC it says that flares come

after a big stress or respiratory infection ( both of which i've had

in the last two mos) i think. i'm just struggling to figure out what

to eat now... maybe i'll try avacados. i really want to feel full.

any suggestions greatly appreciated (thanks to those who have

suggested!).

Until you get your flare under control you might want to go back to

the intro diet for a couple of days and then gradually readd foods

if you respond. The culprits that may be causing trouble are

muffins, pnut butter, chamomile tea and lastly the yogurt - some

don't tolerate it during a flare.

If this doesn't work you might want to try meds or GSE , which some

have found helpful).

To help feel full just eat larger portions of the intro diet foods

I'm trying L-Glutamine (just bought it today), It says it's legal. We

can't afford meds (though if desperate we will). Is cheddar cheese

okay? I really like it plus I need more calories. Have lost 12 lbs in

two and a half weeks. Ordinarily I'd be thrilled... :)

Any change since you added the banana.

If it doesn't make things worse then yes.

Cheddar Cheese has always been one of my " safe " foods during flare-

ups and actually seems to help things settle down

Depending on the frequency of your bm's and the amount of blood

present you may consider looking at getting some meds.

The chamomile may have set things off here's a saved file from the

adult SCD list,

" Chamomile itself is a natural relaxant. So even

though it has not flavourings or anything, by way of its makeup it

is not

legal. It really is used as a natural drug to relax muscles etc but

can

also be very harsh on the gut. I know it makes me run to the loo.

just the ones in the book are legal. "

Next time legal peppermint tea may be better to help with the

gassiness.

thanks. no chamomile. like peppermint better anyway. :)

It is so hard to know what to do. On one hand I've got only one body

hand maybe I need them (not to mention that desperation does take

it's toll). It's hard to keep believing in SCD but I really feel

Hi ,

Some people flare up while being on the diet (the infamous three

month flare) . Sometimes the diet alone can get them stabilized,

but for some they need some meds to get over the hump and then the

diet helps with the rest.
