I was born in NY in 1957. Not sure how much this tells one as the rest of the story is that I moved to Africa in 1962, then England, then Australia (1969) then back to the US in the 80's. I believe my cancer is due to exposure to fallout from the French Nuclear testing in the Pacific between 1968 and 1974. Fallout is the radioactive byproduct of nuclear explosions. The greatest danger to humans are the radionuclides caesium 137, iodine 131, strontium 90 and plutonium 239. Between 1966 and 1974, France exploded 41 atmospheric tests in French Polynesia. Widespread radioactive fallout was experienced throughout the southern hemisphere from these 44 atmospheric nuclear tests. This formed the basis for the case against the tests brought by Australia and New Zealand before the International Court of Justice. When the Court ordered that France should stop atmospheric tests, France refused to accept the jurisdiction of the Court. My research on this topic has informed me that heavy local fallout from these tests affected the islands of Tureia (where the whole population was temporarily evacuated in 1968), Mureia, Tamoure and the Gambier Islands. These islands contain a large population who have developed Thyroid cancer and they have linked the incidence of Thyroid cancer to these tests. As stated above there was also fallout in Australia and New Zealand as well. I remember that in Australia we were not allowed to drink milk for months after each explosion due to the fallout. I was a young teenager (age 12 – 16) during that period and they say that children are more susceptible then adults to getting thyroid cancer as a result of fallout. So this is what I think caused my cancer but I have no proof. But none of this pertains to being born in New York in 1957. I think that the correlation of birth location and year ONLY pertains if one has never left the place of ones birth. If true then perhaps the question should be modified to ask if you have always lived in the place of your birth. Then again - I could be wrong. My mother has had hypothyroid-very low functioning since 1961. She lived in Walla Walla and worked there from 1955 to 1960. Hope this helps your survey. We are the only 2 members of our family(extended and otherwise) with thyroid disease. My 1 sister and brother were conceived and born outside the Hanford area.
