Guest guest
Hi , > Can someone give me a link or explain exactly what phenols are, and what foods have it? Jody's last post about honey and phenols made me curious, because I cannot tolerate honey AT ALL. It's extremely irritating to my stomach. Is the honey clear and pure. Honey that is cloudy can have pollen in it which is very irritating to the gut. Some honeys that do not say pure or 100% are cut with corn syrup and/or illegals. (I found that out the really hard way). Also when you begin SCD you tolerance of different foods will likely shift. Foods I was unable to eat preSCD were okay once I cut out all the nasty complex carbs etc. Also different honeys have different phenol levels depending on what plants they are from. But, your reaction to honey doesn't sound like the traditional phenol reaction that has been posted. Guest guest
Hi Sheila, No, it doesn't sound like the typical phenol reaction. At first, I just bought store bought honey....I think it was from Wal-Mart. Then, my mom got some honey from a local guy. I had the same reaction, only maybe not quite as severe. I forgot to mention that my mouth kind of gets itchy when I eat it too.....maybe it's a true allergy?? I certainly hope not, as that is the only good way to sweeten on the SCD. And believe me....I have a BIG sweet tooth! I am not sure what you mean by " clear and pure. " It is lighter than the Wal-Mart brand, but certainly not transparent or anything. How clear should it be? And where does one purchase clear and pure honey? Oh, and the other reason I don't think it's phenol's is that I can eat other foods that are high in phenols and I do GREAT with them. Like Avacados. I love them, and they ALWAYS sit well with me. Go figure. 32, CD, GF since 7-04, insulin resistant/ovarian cysts, gastroparesis, heart patient since '82. In the gathering info/experimenting with recipes stage of the diet. Hope to begin SCD soon. The colour depends on what flowers the bees went to. " Clear " means that it is not cloudy. The label should say " 100% " and/or " pure " honey. Guest guest
Trella, I had to go look up Satsumas on Google. I had never heard of them. They look like small oranges. How many is " too many' " ? And can you describe what " freaked out " means? As for which type of No Fenol to get, any of them are fine. Guest guest
I would not give her any more for a long while with that type of response. What happens when she eats apples and other brightly colored fruits or when she drinks apple cider and grape juice? You mentioned that she had been so much more calm on the diet... it makes it seem like the issue might be just with this one particular food rather than all phenols unless you had been restricting her phenol intake all this time. Guest guest
Jody, She has done fine with apples, blueberries, strawberries, and grapes. She drinks organge juice and grape juice with no problem. I have not tried apple cider. Her reaction has made me nervous about trying new fruits. I will certainly keep her away from Satsumas for awhile, and pray when I introduce a new fruit to her. Two things are possible: 1. she ate a big bunch. If possible, it is better to start with a small amount and gradually build up. Hard with kids though if they find something they like. 2. maybe she was sensitive to a pesticide etc. that the fruit was sprayed with.
