It's very intersting to see Adam Saltman's name turn up on this

site. He has been in the UK teaching the microwave ablation

technique to Steve Hunter, cardiac surgeon in Middlesbrough in the

North East of England. Steve Hunter is about to be let loose on a

pericardial defect which I have, and at the same time, (I suspect)

will have a team of people to whom he will be teaching the

technique. The guess is that the defect is causing my permanent AF,

which I have been in since December of last year and which is not

very well or comfortably controlled by digoxin and verapamil.

This all seems to be very new in the UK and, although the medics

haven't told me this, through my own research and surmising, I may be

a guineapig cum teaching aid for Manchester. Are there people on

this site who have had the microwave abalation done? What has been

the experience? Thanks, Sue in the UK

Hi, Kat,

In a way I envy the people who have the guts to go for it with an

ablation. I can hardly imagine what it would be like again to just

do things and not worry about it causing ectopics or afib.

We all have to make our decision about what is best for us.

As to the muscle vs. vein, I think the state of the art with Dr.

Natale etc. is to work not on the vein but just outside it in the

muscle part of the heart. I think this lessens the chance of

stenosis.
