Hi , Welcome to the group. I cant help you with post op babies, because

I havent had mine yet. I know that my pregnancy has been different, but both

baby and myself are healthy. Every pregnancy is different whether it be pre WLS

or post WLS. Doesnt matter whether or not you have had surgery necessarily,

pregnancy after bypass

My name is and I am new to this group. I am 25 years and I

weigh 250 pounds. I have one daughter who is 16 months old. It took

me almost three years to get pregnant with her I assume because my

being overwieght caused fertility problems. It was very difficult

for me to come to the decision to have the gastric bypass mostly

because I want to have more children and I have many fears about

pregnancy after the surgery. But I felt like it was the right thing

to do and I also felt like it was my best chance at getting pregnant

again if I lost the weight. So I haved joined this group in hopes of

receiving information from those of you have been down this path

already and in hopes that you can calm my fears about pregnancy after

the bypass. I would love to hear about any of you who have had

babies after the surgery and how things went. I know you have

probably told your story a bunch before, but I would love to hear

it. One question I will shoot out right away is about the " tummy

tuck " after the surgery. Many people have alot of excessive skin in

their tummy after the surgery. so if you plan to get pregnant ASAP

after the surgery, should you have the tummy tuck first or wait until

your doen having children. Those of you who have already had the

surgery, did you find that your fertility improved after you lost the

weight??? I am on a waiting list to get into to see the surgeon and

it seems like I will be able to have this surgery somewhere around

February 2003. So I have a little wait ahead of me and I am trying

to find out what I can before the surgery. I want to know about what

pregnancy is like after the surgery versus before the surgery.

Please any input, advice or stories you can share would be greatly

appreciated. Thank you

had my baby, yet. But, I'll tell my story and hopefully it will give

you some insight that will help you with your decisions.

I am 32 years old. I had an Open RNY 6/29/00. At that time, I

weighed 230#. I already had a son who had been born 5 1/2 years

prior to my gastric bypass. I had no problems with fertility when I

got pregnant with him. I was on the pill from the time he was born,

through my bypass and up until I got pregnant this time. I lost 115#

by the time I had my 2 year anniversary. Also by that time, I had

divorced, remarried and decided to have another child. So, my new

husband and I decided I should go off of the pill. One month later,

I was pregnant. I'm due 2/9/03. To date I've gained about 12-15#.

I feel awesome, very little problem with nauseau during my first tri-

mester which is WAY different from my first pregnancy. I have MUCH

more energy than I did with that pregnancy, too. I didn't have any

plastic surgery done after my surgery. Fortunately (or

unfortunately) I didn't have enough of an apron to warrant insurance

paying for any. However, I think that if I HAD needed it but known

that I wanted to have babies, too....I would probably hold off on the

plastics until after all baby making was complete. But, you might

want to check into your insurance before you make any permanent

decisions as I don't know if they have some kind of a " grace period "

or something on wls-related plastic surgery coverages.

Welcome to the group !

I am one who has had a baby after WLS. Surgery was 5/03/99 and I had my baby

5/23/02. Born completely healthy and happy... 7 lbs 6.6 oz, 21 inches in

length. She just had her 4 month ped appt and is in the 98th percentile for

length, 75th percentile for weight and 55th percentile for head circumference.

She's an absolute angel... really!

As for your question about " tummy tucks " , it is up to you and your financial

situation. If money is not a concern, heck, go for it! LOL !! I've

personally have had several plastic procedures performed before I became

pregnant. I want another baby, will probably try again in December, so I will

wait til I'm done breastfeeding the next baby before I go back under the knife

for " touch-ups " .

You're at an age where you do not need to try to get pregnant ASAP after WLS.

My WLS surgeon, Dr Alan Wittgrove, recommends waiting at least a year out and at

goal before trying to conceive. I know Kris has a copy of his prego report in

the Files section; also you can view it at www.gastricbypass.com .

It seems some surgeons do not warn patients that fertility increases leaps and

bounds following WLS - boggles my mind. Please make sure you use a reliable

contraceptive or even double contraceptive after WLS.

I had a baby before WLS but I was not obese when I became pregnant with her, I

became obese as a result of the pregnancy and continued on til I made the

decision to have WLS so I can't compare being prego while obese to prego thin.

Thank you for your help and response. I just wanted to ask you

another question. You said that you had done some plastic surgery following

the WLS. Was this a tummy tuck and did you do it before getting pregnant. I

am hoping that my insurance will pay for a tummy tuck, if I can prove medical

necessity. But I suppose I will have to wait and see how much extra skin I

have on my tummy after the weight is gone. But the reason I asked the

question is because I am mostly concerned about having a tummy tuck done and

then getting pregnant very soon afterwards. Say like 2 or 3 months later.

What will that do to the " new " tummy. What about the incision of the tummy

tuck? I know it probably sounds a little dumb, but I am worried that if I

get a tummy tuck and then get pregnant very soon afterwards, that my incision

will split open!!!! Yikes!!! My tummy is the only thing I will really worry

about when it comes to plastic surgery, unless there is a problem with my

breasts. I have very large breasts, and I know when I lose the weight, I'll

lose some of those too, thank goodness, because I am tired of carrying around

these watermelons!!!! But I am concerned that there will be alot of loose

skin on my breasts as well. I have heard of some insurances paying for

plastics on tummy, thighs,breasts,arms and chin. I suppose that is the

really lucky though. Anyway, thank you for your help and advice.

I had an abdominoplasty, brachioplasty, mastopexy w/ silicone implants and lipo

(all over...LOL!!) in July 00 and Dec 00. Set out to conceive in Fall 01,

positive prego test in Sept 01 and delivered in May 02. I wouldn't dream of

trying to conceive less than 6 months out from a tuck.....enjoy that flat tummy!

I was big breasted when I was obese, when I got down to goal I was a 36D, but

they were rocks in socks if you know what I mean. With the mastopexy (and

implants) I went to a 34 DD (had lipo in the bra line area while he was there).

After the next baby (if we are fortunate) I will go back in and remove the mama

jamma implants to more conservative ones......like C cup style.

My plastics were self-pay and the tune-ups will be too. So if you are relying

on insurance to pay, wait til after the baby dancing days are over to do the

springboard tightening. Just my opinion, you and others may feel differently.
