Guest guest
Hi Louise - welcome! Is your granddaughter on an IEP now with the school (an individual education plan?). The schools don't have to have a one on one aid for Shy but it's something you should work into her IEP - if it's in there, they need to honor it. You can call a meeting of her educational team at any time to amend her IEP. Also, since you're new at this, you might look into finding a parent advocate to go with you to the IEP meeting - that's allowed and folks often find it helpful. Take care Barbara --- You wrote: Hello, My name is Louise and I am new to the group, I have guardianship of my three year old grand daughter who had a cochlear implant Oct. 28 and was hooked up Dec. 1. I have had to fight to get her in head start and get what she needs, I have a question if anyone who might know, they told me they would get an aid for the room but not for Shy, They have the teacher and a teachers aid for fifteen children counting Shy, she is the only deaf child, she has been in head start for three weeks and I have been there everyday I am afraid she will wonder off because she does not understand a lot and the only sound she recognizes is the blow dryer, water and the phone. Does anyone know if they have to get an aid for just Shy a lot people tell me they do but the school tells me no, just like they keep telling me she couldn't go into head start until she is 4 until I got all the information and they knew I wasn't going to stop. It is a safety issue, they leave the door open so the children and go to the bathroom and when the two woman are busy Shy can just wonder out so I do not want to leave and this week has been really hard because she put her headpiece in her mouth and had to ship it back and get a new one. Any information I would appreciate, --- end of quote --- ******************************* Barbara Mellert Manager, Social Science Computing Kiewit Computing Services Dartmouth College 13A Silsby Hall; HB 6121 Hanover NH 03755 Telephone: 603/646-2877 URL: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~ssc

Guest guest
Hi Louise - That's good your team is meeting soon - is her teacher part of the IEP meetings? She should be able to talk about her safety concerns and having a fulltime aid for her. Barbara --- You wrote: They don't have it in her IEP but we are going to have another meeting again soon because she has to have OT and Pt and have to have a meeting about that. Her teacher is even worry about her safety, they said they were just waiting to see if she really needed one, she can do about 50 signs but nobody knows how to do signs in her class. Really her teacher and speech Therapist is trying to do everything they can to help and education themselves, her speech Therapist is going the a class at the end of month for the cochlear implant. --- end of quote ---
