Guest guest
Pat, I started learning sign when Kennedy was about 6months and trying to teach her 1-2 new signs a week that pertained to her life at the time and went from there. I think the eariler the better. Hearing kids get language from birth... Weir Visit the Weir family online: http://ca.geocities.com/weirfamilyrogers Home: lisaweir@... Work: lisa.weir@... Guest guest
Pat - This is an excellent approach - sometimes fear of ever knowing enough sign ourselves keeps us from starting to sign with our children. Other times we wait, because we are waiting for a " final " report that shows what the loss actually is. Who knows what will be in the future, but if Aidan has any degree of loss, I would try to introduce sign ASAP. The one to two signs a week that are meaningful in his life are a great way to start. It will not prevent him from learning to speak if that is within his range of capability. Guest guest
Pat, Agree with and Kim. We started signing with when she was 6 months old also. It's never too early. We started with Elly (who is hearing and has no medical or developmental issues) from birth and this helped her speech no end. She still speaks and signs at age 3 and 's signing improves daily. Any little you can give to Aida will benefit him greatly. Flo
Guest guest
Pat-- We haven't got great answersadvice on this one yet either--mostly because our panel of expertis is still (we interperate: fiddling around) waiting for " the definitive diagnosis. " A little history: Evan failed two hearing screenings, then had his 1st BAER at 2 months (which he failed, but the audiologist thought this was b/c the probes didn't fit into his ear canals; he had " near normal " performance on the one side they were able to test by bone conduction); he had a second BAER at 6 months (which he also failed having profound loss on the right and severe-profound on the left; this was in the presence of fluid in both ears--worse on the right; he woke up before the bone conduction test could be done). Evan is scheduled to have tubes put in his ears March 30th, and all the testing will be repeated under anesthesia. The best guess is that draining the fluid will improve things, but he will still have at least moderate loss. So even though everybody knows this--I think they are waiting until this testing is done before they commit to any plan of action. In the mean time, my husband and I were planning on teaching him baby sign anyway. We have " Sign with your baby " and the " Time to sign " books/videos. The first recommends starting at 6-7 mos and the second much earlier--both say it's never too late. I know ~10 signs and my husband knows ~30 that he uses with Evan pretty regularly (Dad is the primary care-giver). Probably this is not optimal, but with all the other developmental fish to fry we figure this will have to do until we have the test results at the end of the month. Of the two videos we have, " Sign with your baby " is my favorite--an easy place to start (not too many signs to learn, but again it's designed for kids who can hear). It will not be near enough for Evan if he stays at his current level of hearing. Pat wrote: Regarding this matter, I was wondering.. Aroung what age should one start with sign language? Guest guest
Pat, Tubes are put in the ears when there is fluid behind the ear drum which doesn't drain properly. Many children get them after recurrent ear infections. It allows the fluid to have a path to drain and also prevents hearing loss (temporary) due to the fluid behind the ear drum. Kids who have the fluid can't hear or hear as though they are under water--once the tubes are placed they no longer hear that way--or so it should be. The pressure that builds in the ear when you are flying no longer applies to kids who have tubes becuase the pressure is elmininated through the tube path! Sometimes the tubes get plugged with wax or fluid and have to be replaced. Anytime you go to the doctor, you should have Aidan's ears looked at to make sure he doesn't have fluid in his ears, as this is very very common in our kids and can lead to hearing loss. > > Regarding this matter, I was wondering.. > > Aroung what age should one start with sign language? > > > > Aidan is turning 1 year old in April and nothing's been done > yet!! > > > > > > Pat- > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > CHARGE SYNDROME LISTSERV PHOTO PAGE: > > http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=2117043995 > > > > Membership of this email support groups does not constitute > membership in the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation or CHARGE Syndrome > Canada. > > For information about the CHARGE Syndrome > > Foundation or to become a member (and get the newsletter), > > please contact marion@ or visit > > the web site at http://www.chargesyndrome.org > > (CHARGE Syndrome Canada - http://www.chargesyndrome.ca) > > > > 8th International > > CHARGE Syndrome Conference, July, 2007. Guest guest
Pat, I've taught " normal " babies to sign earlier than they could talk. Our babies have much more to deal with including where we need to place our hands so they can see the signs. Even with all they are dealing with I say it is never too early. Guest guest
Pat - I don't know your son's hearing/vision loss, but every CHARGEr may start signing at different times. So I will tell you about my son, Ethan. We started learning sign language when he was 8 months old. He started imitating sign around 2 yrs old and it wasn't until the last year (around 3 yrs old) and he started school that he has spontaneously signing. He still uses a lot of gestures combined with the signing, but cannot talk because of his trach. With our Early Intervention program, we were allowed " Deaf Mentor " services which a deaf individual came to our house to teach us sign. Jody Pat wrote: Regarding this matter, I was wondering.. Guest guest
Hey Pat, Well look at me..I'm hard of hearing, and can't hear low noises and far away distance noises too well, but guess what? I can hear better with my hearing aids on, but still low voices are still hard for me to understand ya know. I didn't learn sign language till I was around 7 yrs old, in 1st grade back then! Some kids learn sign language at an early age, or later on in their childhood life, right? Ol' Chipper > P.S. Guest guest
Thanks Jody & Chipper for your inputs! I've contacted just this week the NAD here in Galway and we'll start sign classes with Aidan next week!! Jody, Aidan's vision in one eye is ok, not that good in the other, which is fair enough, isn't it?? About his hearing, here we are, hanging in Limbo. So far he has failed all " click " hearing tests in both ears but we have already contacted the CI Dept. in Dublin and, in a very slow motion, it's being working on.. That's why I wanted to start with sign language STRAIGHT AWAY, 'cause Aidan will be already 1 year old next month and I simply cannot sit around and wait anymore for the results of the hearing tests to do something! As several people acknowledged, the ealier the better! And that's where I deeply want to thank Chip for his post, as is the first one to tell me that he started LATER than the average (and, as he points out: Look at him now! LOL Good man, Chip!! Cheers, Chipper. It's been really reassuring I almost have started to think it was getting TOO late for my Little Warrior.. Hugs from Green Auld Ireland, amigo Chipper! Guest guest
Wow Chip! I remember seeing you in Miami and would have never known you learned sign language later--you were going a mile a minute with your hands! Guest guest
Pat - Aiden's vision sounds a little like Ethan's and if at close range (2-4 feet), Ethan is able to pick up the signs. Now, it's his fine motor skills that are lagging behind so many signs look the same when he is trying to sign to us. We took the same stance as you in that we didn't know what his hearing would bring, so we'd better find a way to communicate with him. And now that he has an implant and is hearing some speech, we still do sign with him all of the time since he is probably still missing out on information.
