Hi Dave......

We go to Dr. Schimschock, too. In fact, we're going in to see him next Tuesday.

You have got me thinking about the possibility of going back to Keto if we can't

make better headway with what we're doing (the Specific Carbohydrate Diet plus

Keppra). We lost control in our second year on Keto and I knew from many a long

conversation with that Katera's weight being above the 25th percentile

was possibly working against her. We did reduce calories to stop her gaining any

more weight.... but we never got her down below the 50th. I imagine that is at

least one option we could further explore, should I decide I can stand the

thought of going back to weighing meals. :) We're hanging in there for now.....

control is better than what we had in the last six months of the Keto diet (over

a year ago) but the thought of 100% control long term is a dream. Katera does

have a structural brain anomaly so I'm not sure that will ever happen. Congrats

on the seizure control you have acheived! That's wonderful..... :)

Patti, former Keto list moderator and mom to Katera, age 7, former Keto Kid for

2 yrs 3 months..... in Ridgefield, Washington.

The following is excerpts from the letter sent to my physician who

has over 80 children on the Ketogenic diet. I want you to know

had been on the Ketogenic diet three years before we got

her seizures under control. As you know, once the child is deemed

refractory to medication, the chances of us getting her seizures

under complete control are slim to none. However we did it.

has no known cause for her seizure disorder. She has been

thoroughly tested by some of the best physicians in the country.

Thanks Patti. Dr. Shimschock is a fine physician. - And knows

her job...

When the seizures stopped, my daughter finally started to

want to learn to walk! She is still non-verbal. I figure two more

years on the diet will give us a better idea of her potential.

At this time she is still very unsteady and appears still

disorganized.

Best of luck on your decision with Katera.

Dave,

Yes, Dr. S is an absolute gem...... and we have the experience of having been

through four other ped neuros in the Portland area before him...... ALL of whom

were terrible. I don't know what I'll do when he retires! I hope has

continued success with her development. I don't know how old she is but just

wanted to let you know that Katera did not walk until age 6..... a year and a

half ago. She's still not terrific at it, but improves all the time. Recently,

our PT told me she now considers Katera to be a truly " functional walker " .....

and that there is no turning back. It's been a long road..... lots of hard

work..... but such an accomplishment for her.
