We don't have anything different than the usual ones either. But my aunt, who

lost much of her hearing due to an illness, has lights that start flashing,

like littel vesions of the bubble on the top of a police car. The alarm is in

the hallway -- the lights are in her room, the kitchen (which is open to the

livingroom) and the den in the basement. She can " hear " the alarm no matter

where she is in the house.

We haven't done that yet ... Ian still hears the really loud sounds like the

smoke alarms. But it is our plan to add the " light show " to the house when

it's needed.

We got a strobe light with a HORRIFICLY LOUD alarm from the local fire

department which is located in 's bedroom. It was provided free by them

though we had to fill out paperwork showing medical necessity. No financial

need required

I don't know about one that he could hear but they have ones with strobe lights

to alert those with hearing issues. I'm not sure where to get one, I would also

recommend a carbon monoxide monitor as well they have all of those with strobe

lights and I'm pretty sure they have some that make noise and the flashing

lights.

Now that has a severe-profound loss, I was just thinking today

installed in his bedroom? We have regular smoke alarms but there is

Thanks!

There are several companies that sell the alarms on-line. You can type into any

search engine " fire alarm " and " hearing impaired " and there will be plenty of

shopping opportunities! (harris communications and many, many, others) I agree

to contact your local fire department as every local area has different options.

There may also be a state agency dedicated to D/HI issues. You can call your

local family and youth services offices and they can point you in the right

direction. (sometimes it's Division of Family and Youth Services, sometimes it's

called other things. It's in the government section of your phone book) There

are many options that are re-imbursable or free of charge. There are also many

options of " portable " pieces of equipment that can help you while traveling. (If

a hotel you happen to stay at is not ADA compliant.) Little fact to put in the

back of your mind... there are " hotel kits " available for sale. Many hotels,

realizing they do not want to be held liable if something disastrous happens,

have decided to comply with the ADA ruling and have at the desk a pack that

contains a portable TTY, a fire alarm, a motion detector or door knocker...

basically it's the necessary safety equipment that you would expect. I am sure

there are hotels who have not complied with the guidelines but it doesn't hurt

to call ahead and ask.

Sorry about the long e-mail... getting over a cold and the DayQuil is getting to

me :) hee hee

We have one with a strobe light and an alarm. However, she can hear the

alarm even without her aids.
