I really hit the " send " button too soon on this one-

" unilize " should be " utilize " and " comcept " should

be " concept " .

Maxine,

Due to your tenure, both on and off this list, the grammar and spelling police

told me that they have decided to offer you professional courtesy in this

situation.

I appreciate the consideration. Now just let someone try to

say that this job doesn't offer benefits!

I have to jump in and say it's a training thing. I have, his attitude aside,

one of the best EMT partners you could ask for. He takes vitals, he does

splinting, he gets my drugs ready, hooks up the EKG, sets my IV up, and he takes

every patient that doesn't require ALS interventions. Even when he doesn't take

the patient, I can't get to the E.D. without him. When he's not in the back, he

puts great effort and focus in getting to the E.D. in the safest, shortest way

possible.

That being said, I'm a pretty good (at least confident) paramedic, but my bet is

you wouldn't want me delivering your newborn kiddo when there was an OB/GYN as

readily available. I've delivered kids, I've had pretty good exposure to

dealing with complicated pregnancy, but that isn't a field where I have trained

as much as a doc has.

One of the reasons I got my Intermediate was that I figured out, fairly quickly,

that there wasn't much I could do past basic first aid as an EMT. I wanted to

be able to perform advanced skills, I went to class, had a great teacher (Vicki

May, if anyone's asking), took a test and POOF, I was certified as an EMT-I. I

had a good and patient mentor at hire-Pattison EMS that tolerated my

rookie status well and got me hooked on continuing to get my Paramedic.

I agree that most EMT's are under-used. I have to think, though, that if you

want to perform the advanced skills, you need to go through training and have

that clinical experience behind you. Just my two cents, I'll expect

change.....
